Description

For this weeks assignment, I want to focus on a particular issue within the American justice system.

This issue pertains to plea bargains, and how this has likely been an unintended result of a groundbreaking 1963 civil rights decision (Gideon v Wainwright).

1. Explain the background of the Gideon v. Wainwright case. What was the defendant (Gideon), denied? Explain the Supreme Court decision and the impact it had on all court cases.

2. Do you feel the case was decided with good intentions but has resulted in the increased numbers of plea bargains? Why or why not.

3. What are some of the proposed reforms to hopefully preventing the use of plea bargains? Explain your answer.
