The Role of women in Mexican Revolution
Introduction
Apart from the struggle for independence, the Mexican revolution was one of the most
violent encounters in the history of Mexico. The decade old Revolution claimed a lot of lives just
as it also caused massive destruction of property. However, the greatest bearers of the harshest
brunt of the war were children and women. As in common in any violent struggle, the two
groups of members of the society were most vulnerable. Even though the women suffered a lot
during this grueling period, must be noted that they made a point in the history of the war. They
took part in various activities that had a bearing on the general conduct of the war and helped
liberate the people of Mexico from the web of dominion by foreign colonial powers.
Subsequently, this paper explores the various roles that women played in the Revolution.
The causes of the revolution
Before venturing into the roles that women played, it is fundamental first to examine the
underlying issues that gave rise to the struggle. That is necessary so as to get the background
information as to why women would have to get into the conflict and the nature of their
participation. Now, the first issue that bothered the people of Mexico was the leadership style of

the president, Porfirio Diaz. The president had stayed in office for 31 years, and there was no
sign that he was going to vacate the office anytime soon. Besides, the president had been using
some dictatorial tendencies in the running of the affairs of the country (Katz, 35).
Consequentially, he gathered a lot of enemies of the time and opposition against his rule was so
thick. The misrule to which he had subjected his people was no longer tenable and everything
had to be done to do away with him from the helm of the leadership of the country.
The level of social inequalities in Mexico had soared to astronomical limits and women
were the greatest losers. Research has it that during the time of the revolution, the gap between
the rich and the poor had become appalling and that caused the clamor for social reforms. The
people wanted to be given an opportunity work on the lands so as to earn a living. During the
time, most of the owners of the largest tracks of land were not locals but the wealthy families
from the colonial times. The citizens of Mexico, therefore, yearned for better social reforms that
would help them participate in the process of wealth creation.
Finally, the revolution was created by the exploitation and poor treatment of the Mexican
