A seismograph 300 km from the epicenter of an earthquake recorded a maximum amplitude of 5.5 102µm. 

Find this earthquake's magnitude. (Round your answer to one decimal place.)

Unfortunately there exist several different formulas. I used the Lillie empirical formula for distance between 200 km and 600 km. 

M˅L = log˅10(A) + 3.0*log˅10(D) - 3.38 .... ˅ means sub 
= log˅10(5.3*10^2/1000) + 3.0*log˅10(300) - 3.38 
= 3.8
