Time is a valuable resource for nurses and the order of nursing actions effect thepatient’s outcome. Nursing judgment is a vital skill in nursing and management of carerelies on this. Priority setting is an essential nursing skill and a knowledge deficiency canhave profound effects on the patients. This is a skill that can be difficult for newlygraduated nurses. This is a skill that is perfected with experience and opportunities.“Priority setting can be defined as the ordering of nursing problems using notions ofurgency and/or importance, in order to establish a preferential order for nursing actions(Hendry,2014)”.

If I were the nurse in this situation, the client I would see first is Lenny Williams inroom 6307. The signs and symptoms that Laura the assistive personal is describing may berelated to a possible deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of his right calf. Deep vein thrombosis

Assess patient with right calf pain first  DVT

Setting priorities in nursing requires clear understanding the steps necessary to reach positive client outcomes. Nurses make clinical decisions on a daily basis, and unless they base those decisions on an appropriate, evidence-based, priority framework, they may compromise expected client outcomes.

Nancy Jones, in room 6310, has infiltrated IV line. We were unable to start a new IV, and her ampicillin is due at 8:00 a.m.

Justin Foster in room 6314, called for pain medication at 7:00 AM, so that still needs to be given.

Anna Chen in room 6315, is diagnosed with gastritis and called for assistance the restroom. I've contacted assistive personnel and let them know this.

Lenny Williams in room 6307, contacted Laura, the assistive personnel, stating that he’s experienced pain in his right calf; and Laura stated that his calf was red.

This nurse is receiving valuable information she needs to care for her assigned clients. She is making decisions about what to do.

I understand you said your right calf is hurting. May I examine your leg? Using the Airway-Breathing-Circulation, ABC-approach to client care, this nurse gives priority to assessing the client who reports signs of deep vein thrombosis. By deciding to delegate care for the client who needs help getting to the restroom to the assistive pe inrsonnel, she is able to provide immediate care to the client with the highest priority need. And later, will then be able to assess the needs of her other clients. It's important to use a framework when prioritizing clients needs. In this situation, the nurse uses the ABC framework as a guide. There are a variety of other frameworks nurses can use for priority setting. With the acute versus chronic framework, the client with acute needs takes priority over those with chronic needs. With the emergent versus routine framework, the client with an emergent need takes priority over a client with a routine need. When using the nursing process and the assessment-first framework, the first action is to assess the client, and then to establish priorities of care based on that assessment. And when using the safety and risk-reduction framework, the nurse identifies the greatest risk for injury, and implements interventions to reduce or eliminate that risk.

Priority setting plays a vital role in nursing as it enables nurses to order nursing issues
based on urgency and significance. It is crucial nursing process that improves patient outcomes,
but lack of it can be detrimental to patients. Specifically, through priority setting, a nurse
becomes more effective at their job by addressing health issues in a timely manner based on their
severity. As a nurse, I must set nursing priority for my patients. I have four patients: Nancy Jones
with an infiltrated IV line, Justin ...
