The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in the United States is 270,000,000 to 310,000,000 (William,2012).

There were many landmark cases such as Columbia v. Heller (2008) The Court ruled that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution confers an individual right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes such as self-defense. It also ruled that two District of Columbia provisions, one that banned handguns and one that required lawful firearms in the home to be disassembled or trigger-locked, violate this right (Second Amendment, 2014). McDonald v. Chicago (2010) was another landmark case. A supreme court case that decided if the second amendment did protect a individual and their right to keep and bear arms.

The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Peak, Gaines, & Glensor, 2010, p. 352).

The United States is also the leading supplier of conventional arms to the developing world; more than 300 U.S. companies produce arms and/or ammunition, and more than 4 million firearms are manufactured annually for domestic sale or export (Reuters, 2007). Nearly a half million victims of violent crimes each year state that they faced an offender with a firearm, and about two-thirds of the murders committed each year involve the use of firearms (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2007b. The state that has the toughest gun law is our nations capitol Washington D.C. This law made it illegal for citizens to own buy or even sell a handgun.

Owning a gun has become common in the modern society.  Officers and civilians can own and use the guns for different purposes. Half a century ago, not many people who owned guns and those who owned were to follow stricter rules and regulations guiding on how to handle them in different situation. There has been worry of gun ownership due to the increase of juvenile homicide offences. The number of homicides involving guns has increased over the

Homicides involving guns is on increases over the ages. The number of juvenile arrest for the violation of guns surpasses beyond a hundred percent. As the weapon of choice, gun has increased homicide thus making it a deadly situation among those who owns guns.

However, there are much of unreported and uninvestigated cases of juvenile violence incidences thus making it hard to tell the exact number of cases involving the use of gun. It also makes it hard to understand the causes of such violence and the factors that geared to such deadly acts. The role of the guns in the juvenile homicides is however being more evident and may increase to some unprecedented levels, which might make it to go out of control (Carter, 2012).

The gun ownership has become uncontrollable in some cases such as allowing the teenagers to handle the weapon. This has led to increase in gunshot injuries and fatalities among the young men. The gunshots are either accidentally or under the influence of drugs or depression. These continue to increase the death to exceed the ones by natural causes.

The police officers together with other community organizations should educate and advocate for better handling of the guns, provide information on usage of the guns as well as use community relations to reduce its deadliness. Police chiefs have been using these tactics as well as recommending tough laws to prevent the issue.
