History and background
The idea and general concept of statistical process control solely originated from Dr.
Walter Shewhart from Bell Laboratories in the year 1920. Statistical process control was further
developed and applied to the Japanese industry after World War Two by one Dr. W. Edwards
Deming. Firms and business entities in general have adopted the use of statistical process control
in the entire globe to avoid the occurrence of products variability before being delivered to the
customers or to the market domain. It has acted as the backbone of ensuring maintained product
quality as it sets standards to be attained.
Dr. Shewhart further discussed the two causes of variations in product. In his research he
presented; chance variation, which occurs due to the several of interacting factors that are
naturally random and is neither controlled by human hands nor preventable (Blossfeld, 2014).
This is what Dr. Deming referred to as common cause variation due to its inherent and natural
nature. Secondly, there is an assignable cause of variation, which occurs from the discrepancies
of machines, raw materials to human factors. This can crouch in at any manufacturing stage,
which can be corrected before final product production, avoiding serious cases of outliers with
the direction of upper and lower control limits. Dr. Deming referred to it as special variation
cause due to its unstable nature over time.
Definitions
Statistical process control in the general view is a quality control method that applies
statistical analysis methods. This is simplified as a ray of tools and techniques used to enhance
the determination process of stability and forecasting of quality in various production processes
(Lipták, 2013). It is further explained as an analytical tool that is essential for determining the

working of a process. The entire output process is graphed in control charts that show viability
and improvement of various processes.
