Description
The unit activity objective is to assess whether you can differentiate transactional capabilities of an information system (IS) from the narrower management information system (MIS) capabilities of those systems. All MIS are IS, but not all IS are MIS.
- Think about how a person or organization interacts with a large number of Information Systemsover time.
- Some of those systems are computer or software systems, although that isn’t absolutely required.
- Many of those systems will have components that could be described as Management Information Systems (MIS).
Create a list of 10 such Information Systems, each of which must have at least some MIS capability or function. For each:
- Name the information system,
- Describe the management component or functionality of the system,
- Describe what impact it would have on the system -- if any -- if that management aspect were absent, and
- List any complementary assets (if any) that need to be in place around the system for the management functions to performed effectively.
A common error on this activity is when a piece of software is listed as an information system. Software often implements an information system, but the software itself is not an information system. Another common error is listing a system in only transactional processing terms, omitting the management aspects that would comprise an MIS capability.

generates ideas, and reaches decisions in a group environment. Designed to accommodate
input from different users interacting instantaneously with the system to reach a joint
decision.
✓ Expert system- It is also called knowledge worker system .Is a computer program that
uses artificial intelligence technology to encourage an organization's behavior element or
a human with expert experience and knowledge in a specific field.
✓ Geography information system- a computer system used to pick up, store, examine, and
present data associated with a locus on the earth's surface and helps organizations and
individuals to understand spatial relationships and patterns.
