Description

React to what you have read in the assigned works by Angela Davis and John Edgar Wideman by posting a comment for each of the four numbered topics below. After you have written a comment for each of the numbered topics, you will then write a reply to a post that one of your peers has made about the four numbered topics. Every response or reply you make should be an effectively written paragraph that is at least four sentences, so every paragraph you write should include a clear topic sentence and other sentences that provide supporting details.

Once a student has completed this discussion board assignment, he or she will have written a total of five paragraphs. Four of the five paragraphs will be in one post in which there are comments for each of the four numbered topics and one paragraph will be a reply to another student's work.

Feel free to like your peers' comments. The student who gets the most likes will get an extra three points added to his or her final grade on Essay One.

1. Discuss in detail how the essay by Angela Davis and the memoir by John Edgar Wideman overlap in making the case for criminal justice reform. Your response to topic 1 should reflect that you have read the essay and the memoir adequately.

2. Although Davis and Wideman are highly accomplished black Americans, they have both been touched by America's criminal justice system. Davis is herself famous for being a former political prisoner who was once on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitive List, while Wideman is a man whose brother (and son) went to prison. Studies show most black Americans, regardless of their socioeconomic status, either know someone who went to jail or prison or they themselves have at least once been swept up by the criminal justice system. For topic 2, say whether or not the idea of someone going to jail or prison has been a reality in your own life and tell us how you feel about that.

3. If you could write a letter to Davis, Wideman, or anyone of the people that either of these two authors specifically references in the writings of theirs that you were assigned to read, who would you write that letter to and tell us why you would write to that particular person.

4. This course examines how crime, punishment, and justice are interconnected themes that recur throughout selected works of Black American literature. Based on what you have read in the essay by Angela Davis, and based on what you have read in the memoir by John Edgar Wideman, tell us whether you think one or more of these these three themes is more important than another and explain why you have reached the conclusion about whether one or more of these these three themes is more important than another. Your response to topic 4 should reflect that you have read the essay and the memoir adequately.

PLAGIARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
