The Coral Guardian has embarked on a small-scale coral reef restoration program, a
French nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of coral reefs and community
empowerment. It is proving remarkably successful.
Decades of dynamite fishing, the use of chemicals, sewage and agricultural run-off,
plastic debris, and poor or inactive governance, along with the specter of global warming and
ocean acidification, are decimating coral reefs within the epicenter of marine biodiversity
known as the Coral Triangle. The micro-scale initiative of the program starts to have an impact
on the well-being of the ecosystem and human livelihoods for a much wider area, including a
possible positive impact on the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Komodo National
Park, not only is a part of the marine environment being recovered, with accompanying fishing
industry boosted.
Coral reefs support biodiversity that is staggering. Global coral reefs provide goods and
services of up the US $ 375 billion per year through fisheries, coastal protection, tourism
development, and pharmaceuticals, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). While they cover less than 0.2 percent of the ocean floor, more than 25
percent of the world's marine species, including 4,000 species of fish and 800 different varieties
of hard corals, are home to these ecosystems.
The well-being of 500 million people is linked to healthy coral reefs, with the majority
