Employee Layoff

Laying off employee is one of the strategies that a company may use to reduce costs and
handle the changing economic times. This process can involve relieving the workers of their
duties temporarily or permanently, what is often referred to as retrenchment. The layoff may be
due to the elimination of a position in the firm. Laying off employees is no always an exciting
move to the managers of a company. The process has emotional consequences and how each
manager chooses to handle the situation determines the level of the impacts on them and the
organization as a whole. This paper examines how a manager can manage the dismissal impacts
and the dismissal process in a company.
Dealing with Layoffs
Employee layoffs can be preceded by a lack of morale for the remaining employees. This
must pose a great challenge to the manager. Therefore, the manager can employ communication
and levity techniques (Vohra, 1967). This is where the manager engages the remaining workers
in a social conversation in a bid to change the employee’s attitude towards the organization. This
may involve taking the colleagues out for lunch. In the process of sharing a meal or drink, the
manager can engage the employee in a conversation that is geared towards making the worker
share their feelings concerning the workplace (International Labor Office, & International
Labour Organization. 2008). This will help the manager understand the primary reason behind
the lack of morale among the workers.
Leaders in an organization may consider replacement as an option in closing the gap
created by the layoffs. This is a tricky solution though it can serve the purpose by eliminating
any doubts on the future performance of the organization. It may not be possible for the firm to
