Introduction
Oxytocin is a hormone that behaves as a neurotransmitter. It acts as a chemical
messenger in the brain controlling certain human behaviours ranging from trust, romantic
attachment, empathy, sexual arousal, positive communication, recognition and mother-infant
bonding. That is why it is popularly referred to as the “love hormone”. Oxytocin plays an
essential role in reproduction. In females, the hormone triggers labour initiation, the release
of breast milk, and increasing the mother-child bond (Uvnäs-Moberg, Ekström-Bergström,
Berg, Buckley, Pajalic, Hadjigeorgiou, & Dencker, 2019). Oxytocin also affects males
