Explain the difference between standard deviation and standard error?

Standard deviation is the standard deviation of measurements of individual items.

Standard error is the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the statistic (say mean).

Standard error of xbar is the standard deviation of xbar = sigma/sqrt(n)
