A gallon of gasoline (mostly octane) weighs 6.3 lbs at rm temp. Assuming this mass of gas is completely combusted, how many lbs of O2 are consumed in the process?

Nov 15th, 2014

C8H18+12.5O2= 8CO2+9H2O

Carbon =12

Hydrogen =1

C8H18= 12*8+18*1 =114

Oxygen = 16

12.5O2  =400

The mass of oxygen = 6.3/114 *400 =0.0552*400 =22.1 lbs
