New Jersey Woman (Wife of a merchant and a mother of two children)
Identity
As a wife of a merchant, it is clear that the woman sees her husband rarely due to his
business operations. Merchants were very important during this period and helped in maintaining
the economy (Brown & Don n.p). They enabled the transportation of bulk goods from one point
to another. Merchants had to spend a lot of time away from their families so that they could do
business. The woman has, therefore, been left by the husband with the two children. Her life is
good as she is provided for by her husband. Merchants made a good amount of money most of
which was given to their families or invested in the business. The woman, therefore, can afford
all the basic needs such as food, water, clothing, and shelter. The income at the time is not that
good due to the revolutionary was disrupting her husband's business.
Despite all this, there are many hardships that are faced due to the ongoing revolutionary
war. It endangers her and her children due to the lack of adequate security. Her husband’s stock
is cutting down, and the returns are not favorable. Therefore, the whole family has to adjust to a
new lifestyle that’s harder. The woman is faced by more problems due to the difficulties.
