Astronomers refer to the balance of inward and outward forces inside a star as hydrostatic equilibrium. Use layman's terms to explain, what these forces are, and how they keep a star from either blowing up or collapsing.

Every stars have gases and undergoes nuclear fusion reaction which gives on expanding it due to immense heat.While on the other hand we have gravitational force acting towards center.So they balance each other and stop from exploding or shrinking and this is what we call hydrostatic equilibrium.
