The workplace environment is looked at in most settings as a place in which ethics and
professionalism should thrive. The conduct of employees, as well as management, should reflect
a level of professionalism that is representative of an organization that is concerned with the
reputation that it holds within the social context. Yet, there is a consistent pattern that has
historically been noted in most workplaces. Sexual harassment claims have continuously been
reported, often with women being the victims of such lascivious behavior (Hejase, 2015). News
reports have often been shown as people come forward recounting experiences in which a person
in a position of power abused their position to solicit sexual favors. Numerous reports have also
shown that sexual innuendos and unwarranted sexual advances are a norm in most workplaces.
Studies have shown that as much as 48% of women have reported being sexually harassed within
the workplace, a constant issue that they have to contend with on a regular basis (Radnofsky,
2017). There is a need to eradicate repeated occurrences of sexual harassment within the
workplace in order to foster an environment that is safe for all people to fulfill organizational
objectives with the utmost professionalism (James Campbell Quick, 2016). Therefore, the

the context of sexual harassment. There will be an exploration of how sexual harassment is
understood, how it takes place within the workplace, and the efforts to prevent the re-occurrence
of such incidences. As the examination will show, several advancements have been made in
order to prevent sexual harassment, but there is still room for improvement within the corporate
world.
In order to have explored the elements that are involved in sexual harassment, there is a
need to have a proper understanding of what constitutes sexual harassment. In line with this,
there is also a need to define what constitutes sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is defined as

makes advances either through speech or conduct towards the victim (Nicholas Howald, 2018).
Based on the basic level of definition, there are several contextual applications that can be used
to define a paradigm that entails sexual harassment. In most sexual harassment cases, an element
of power is infused into the paradigm, as the perpetrator is able to take advantage of being in a
position of authority or influence and the victim being in a vulnerable position (Radnofsky,
2017). When determining vulnerability, it is important to note that the understanding goes
beyond surface-level consent. Vulnerability entails the victim having the freedom to decline
advances and having it not stifle their existence or welfare within the environment.
Based on the aforementioned broad definition, there are multiple scenarios that can be
constituted as sexual harassment. In these scenarios, the basic elements such as power,
vulnerability, and consent play an integral role and help in determining whether a person engages
in conduct that can be definitively be called sexual harassment. Various settings in which sexual
harassment can take place can include schools, colleges, domestic settings, and the workplace. In
each of the settings, there is a consistent theme in which power, vulnerability, and sexual conduct
are intertwined in a paradigm that leaves a probable victi...
