Description

Benchmark - Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

Students maintained and submitted weekly reflective narratives throughout the course to explore the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout this course. This assignment combines those entries into one course-long reflective journal that integrates leadership and inquiry into current practice as it applies to the Professional Capstone and Practicum course.

This final submission should also outline what students have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses that surfaced during the process, additional resources and abilities that could be introduced to a given situation to influence optimal outcomes, and, finally, how the student met the competencies aligned to this course.

The final journal should address a variable combination of the following, while incorporating your specific clinical practice experiences:

  1. New practice approaches
  2. Interprofessional collaboration
  3. Health care delivery and clinical systems
  4. Ethical considerations in health care
  5. Practices of culturally sensitive care
  6. Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
  7. Population health concerns
  8. The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
  9. Health policy
  10. Leadership and economic models
  11. Health disparities

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal
A Nurse is an occupation that depends on practices that equip an individual or
students with the necessary skills and experience to undertake various responsibilities. In this
regard, nursing students have to participate in practicum and capstone projects that can enable
them to link the classroom knowledge to the real world. The most notable benefit of engaging
in practicum and professional capstone activities is that it provides an opportunity to gain
whole life experience. In this case, the apprenticeship in a health facility provides care to the
oncology population, which also influences the professional capstone that focuses on
preventing CAUTIs. During the entire period, reflective journals are kept on different
knowledge areas that affected practice.
New Practice Approaches
Engaging in my practicum and capstone project allowed me to learn and
develop new skills and knowledge related to the nursing practice in catering to the
oncology population in a healthcare setting. Most healthcare-associated infections,
especially UTIs that affect the oncology population, arise due to the nursing practices
involved. During my practicum and in undertaking my capstone project, I realized
that the procedures and protocols that the nursing staff use in handling catheters in the
population was a leading cause of these UTIs. Thus, I recommended that nursing
practice in my capstone project adopt a standardized bedside audit tool to monitor the
catheter's status in a patient. In essence, I learned about a new nursing approach to
practice that could help prevent CAUTIs among the oncology population.
Interprofessional Collaboration
The significance and importance of interprofessional collaboration within the
healthcare setting is another concept that I learned in my practicum and my
undertaking of the capstone activities. In this case, I realized that caring and ensuring

3

a positive outcome for the patient depends on various hospitals, including nurses, physicians,
pharmacists, dieticians, and at times social workers. These professionals are in charge of the
patient's multiple services to ensure the facility provides holistic care. Interprofessional
collaboration helps the nursing professionals understand the roles, scope of practice, and
experience of other professionals involved in delivering care to the patient, establishing
effective communication and coordination efforts (Scott, 2017). For example, in my
practicum, I noted that the physicians would keep the nursing staff updated on the patient's
care and what the patient requires; thus, creating a safe environment for delivering quality
care through interprofessional collaboration.
Healthcare Delivery and Clinical Systems
My practicum activities engagement also allowed me to expand my knowledge of
healthcare delivery and clinical systems for the oncology population. While I believed that
following the laid-out procedures can result in a practical health care delivery system, my
experience during the practicum showed me that patient-centered care that integrates health
services was the effective health care delivery system for the population. In this regard, the
design focused on providing quality care services and disease prevention, diagnosis,
treatment, and management. For example, focusing on each oncology patient's individual
needs helped create a health plan that meets these needs, reducing the risks of contacting
CAUTIs.
Ethical Considerations in Health Care
First of all, I was not overly unaware of the ethical issues that are surrounding the
nursing profession. However, while engaging with my practicum and capstone project
activities, I had an opportunity to expand on this knowledge. Making decisions that affect a
patient's health is one of the ethical issues that healthcare professionals face. In this regard, I

4

realized that the standard practice ethics does not well cover other factors that amount
to moral issues such as communication.
Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care
Generally, I was aware that I would interact and engage with people from
different backgrounds; thus, I need to be versed with the different cultures. During my
engagement with the capstone project and practicum activities, I experienced the
significance of practicing culturally sensitive care. It is essential to note that by
understanding and taking into account a patient's cultural values, the nurse can
provide care that meets their expectation (Valizadeh et al., 2017). I detected that the
Hispanics loved involving families in treatment while the African-Americans did not
appreciate involving their families. In this regard, I noted that quality care is sensitive
to the patient's cultural values and needs.
Ensuring the Integrity of Human Dignity in the Care of All Patients
It is essential to note that in the provision of care, all healthcare professionals'
responsibility is to uphold the integrity of human dignity of the patient regardless of
their status (Kadivar et al., 2018). Though I knew that professional ethics directs all
nursing processes, my practicum activities allowed me to find out how using ethics
and code of conduct assists in promoting human dignity for the sick. For example, I
noted that the code dictated that the nursing professional should always respect the
patients' autonomy by not forcing them to use IUC if they can move.
Population Health Concerns
For my practicum and capstone project, the oncology population's population
was undergoing treatment within healthcare facilities. It is essential to note that the
health concerns of people differ based on their needs. From my practicum experience,
it was evident that the level of care offered to the population was determined by their

5

ability to cater to its costs. Hence, the cost of healthcare services is a significant health issue
for these people.
