Bigger’s Fear in “Native son” Fear is that the dominant feeling that the novel’s protagonist larger feels. It emanates from the shortage of power to manage one’s own state of affairs. In native son, the protagonist is afraid of racial discrimination. He fears whites and there are many reasons why he does so. He fears the influence that whites have over his life, they determine where he goes to school, they also determine where he stays and which neighbourhood, and they also determine where he seeks medical attention. He feels he can never rise from his current position and he is bound to live an impoverished life forever. Richard Wright uses the protagonist’s fears to explore how blacks perceive whites and the impact of racial discrimination. The irony in the entire setting is that Bigger still believes in the American dream, he says that “I can’t last many more years, living like this.” This dream strengthens his belief for a better future. He secures a job as a chauffeur, which brings him closer to Mary his boss’s daughter. As the novel progress, we get to understand Biggers picture in a better way, the author uses symbolism to compare Biggers problems to the concerns the abundant blacks face every day.
