Introduction
The healthcare sector has considerably advanced both knowledge-wise and also in terms
of technological infrastructure. The diversity of systems in use in many modern healthcare
industries especially in the developed world requires specialized skills in the management of
information technology (Sousa and Oz, 2014). Healthcare professionals are mainly oriented
towards health and related disciplines hence lack the necessary background to run these systems
which highlight the importance of the chief information officers and their support staff in the
provision of quality healthcare (Ball et al., 2013).
Responsibilities of the CIO
The primary role played by CIO’s is to manage the flow of information in a healthcare
sector. Many institutions currently use several systems to relay and store patient data,
organizational data and other electronic information which require expert management. Such
systems include telehealth monitoring systems as well as custom health information systems used
for diagnostic and treatment functions during healthcare delivery (DesRoches et al., 2013).
Based on the importance of information systems in modern healthcare, CIO’s also play a
significant role in the strategic management and as such may sit on the executive board of a health
