The dilemma presented in the scenario for this case study is that of how Ed can continue
to care for his wife, Jill, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and seek treatment for his
kidney failure. It is necessary to briefly explain the condition of Ed’s wife and the treatment
options available before recommending an appropriate one that will improve his condition and
give him the capacity to continue his duties towards his wife. A common manifestations of
advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease that places enormous burden on those that care for the
patient is memory loss. This results in behavior patterns of Jill that require her husband to
monitor her closely throughout the day. Meanwhile, the treatment options available for the
management of Ed’s condition are hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant.
Hemodialysis is a form of dialysis that is performed using a dialyzer, which acts as an artificial
kidney to remove waste materials from the blood stream, for four hours per session in either a
hospital, dialysis center or at home. In contrast, peritoneal dialysis involves the implantation of a
catheter in the patient’s abdomen, which enables the dialysis solution to be passed into it to filter
waste from the bloodstream and eliminated through the abdomen. This treatment is done on a
daily basis. The third option is kidney transplant and simply involves the replacement of Ed’s
damaged kidney with a healthy one from a donor who can either be a relative or cadaver. To
undergo this procedure the patient will require hospitalization for about a week once a donor has
been found. Also, the patient will need regular visits to the clinic for medication, monitoring and
laboratory test to ensure that his body does not reject...
