Anxiety; a feeling of uncertainty, stress, panic or nervousness, typically towards the
outcome of an unforeseen event, has long been viewed by psychiatrists and psychologists around
the world as having an immense effect and role in human behavior (Leary & Kowalski,1997). The
snowballing worries that become an avalanche, the tightening of the chest, the hot and cold flushes
that bring about confusion, are just but a handful of signs of suffering from this condition. In fact,
most people can relate to these signs more closely because the feelings of edginess and stress are
a natural part of our daily functioning (Bishop et al, 2004).

When these stresses and worries continue becoming more and more persistent, a medical
condition known as anxiety disorder begins to manifest itself in the person’s life (Leary &
Kowalski, 1997). Classified as a mental illness, the condition is as common among older adults as
it is among the young (Bishop et al, 2004). These feelings of nervousness can be so unsettling that
they begin to interfere with the person’s well-being and rids them of their will to enjoy the
pleasures of day to day life, relationships and personal perceptions. In all evidence, it is more than
just a feeling of uncertainty or stress because such moods come to pass once the situation causing

persist or continue to exist without probable cause or reason (Goleman, 2006). The condition is a
serious affliction that makes it hard for a person to carry on with their day to day activities.
Everyone feels nervous or unsettled from time to time, but for someone suffering from anxiety
disorder, these feelings cannot be easily controlled.

This mental condition affects nearly 40 million of adults aged 18 and older, or 18% of the
America’s population. Diagnosing this particular mental disorder can, however, prove difficult as
it is challenging to distinguish it from other psychological health conditions such as depression

due to the similarities between the two (Bishop et al, 2004). Therefore, in order to correctly
diagnose this disorder, general practitioners have developed a system of physical examinations
and blood tests so as to be able to rule out any other conditions that may be bringing about the
same symptoms. Such conditions may include;

A deficiency in Iron or Vitamin B12 and folate

An over reactive thyroid gland

Depression due to stressful situations such as job loss

Anxiety conditions typically don't bear obvious symptoms as they have an inclination to
develop slowly over a given amount of time (Leary & Kowalski, 1997). Given that most people
experience some level of anxiety from time to time at various points in their lives, it can be often
exhausting trying to determine what amount of anxiety is too much or too irrational. Normally,
anxiety tends to be short in duration and can usually be tied to other stressful situatio...
