2x+5y=10

    x+y=3.5

Solve for x and y!

Nov 18th, 2014

Let's solve by substitution.

Solve x + y = 3.5 for y

y = 3.5 - x

Now plug that into the first equation:

2x + 5y = 10

2x + 5(3.5 - x) = 10

2x + 17.5 - 5x = 10

Combine like terms:

(2-5)x + 17.5 = 10

-3x + 17.5 = 10

Subtract 17.5 from both sides:

-3x = -7.5

x = -7.5/-3 = 2.5

Now plug x = 2.5 into the 2nd equation to solve for y:

x + y = 3.5

2.5 + y = 3.5

y = 3.5 - 2.5 = 1
