Description

Research paper that you have been working on throughout the course. First, you will compile the first three sections that you completed:

  • Unit I (the introduction section)
  • Unit III (the review of literature), and
  • Unit V (the air and water quality affects). Be sure to incorporate any feedback you have received from your professor. (Feedback from the instructor: Overall, this section was good, in your discussion I was looking for more description of how lead actually enters the air and water. There are a few routes that you could include to help strengthen this section. Be sure to include those in your final submission)

Then you will add the items listed below.

  • Include a section that examines injuries or workplace hazards related to your topic. In this section, you should include the following items:
    • a brief overview of the injuries or workplace hazards associated with your topic to include the effects of these hazards,
    • an explanation of the environmental factors associated with these hazards,
    • a discussion of methods for preventing these hazards, and
    • an explanation of the significance of occupational health in relation to your to
  • Include a conclusion section that sums up your paper and includes any final thoughts you have on your subject.

Lead Poisoning in Drinking Water
Unit I: Introduction
History of Lead in Drinking Water
Water is an important component of the environment. Consumption of water promotes
the survival of plants, animals, and humans. This is one of the reasons why water is a source of
life. However, water contamination affects the purity of drinking water. One of water's
contaminants is Lead. Presence of Lead in drinking water is commonly from the usage of lead
pipes, plumbing fixtures, and faucets (Lin, Li, Z., & Burns, 2017). Also, plumbing fixtures, pipe
fittings, and welding solders used to contain Lead. This was a major source of Lead in drinking
water in the late 1800s. Earliest health issue raised due to Lead in drinking water happened in
1859. Due to increased lead-related complications from drinking water, limitation in lead
plumbing was enacted in the 1920s. Lead in drinking water can cause an increase in blood
acidity, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, reduces kidney functionality, and reproductive
problems. Lead in drinking water is a problem because of the health effect on humans.
Continuous consumption of Lead in drinking water is a problem due to causing anaemia, brain
and kidney damage. Moreover, high exposure to Lead in drinking water causes death. In
pregnant women, the consumption of Lead in drinking water causes a placental barrier. As a
result, lead exposure in pregnancy leads to spontaneous abortion, gestational hypertension,
impaired neurodevelopment, and low birth weight. Prenatal lead exposure causes deterioration in
maternal health. According to Dave & Yang (2020), infant exposure to lead intake in drinking
water causes infants undergoing coma, seizures, and premature death. Consequently, lead in
drinking water poses various health issues in humans.

The presence of Lead in drinking water is a problem for humans. Before consumption of
water by humans in houses, water undergoes purification and treatment. Purification and water
treatment are authorized and regulated by local and state governments of most countries and
states. In Washington, D.C., water purification and treatment are under the District of Columbia
Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) (Hedgpeth & Shaver, 2016). Initially, the use of chlorine
applied in the purification and treatment of water in Washington, D.C. However, the District of
Columbia Water and Sewer Authority focused on using chloramine for quicker and better
treatment. This resulted in water contamination. The use of chloramines led to lead
contamination in water. As a heavy metal, Lead caused various health issues. In Washington,
D.C, most children were affected by lead contamination. The lead level became so high that the
water pipes were severely undergoing corrosion (Hedgpeth & Shaver, 2016). The corrosion was
due to the increase in acidity levels of the drinking water. Lead in drinking water is a major
health issue because of affecting people living in Washington, D.C. Therefore, understanding
impact of Lead involves evaluation of why Lead contamination of water and air is of public
health importance, review of literature related to lead contamination, evaluation of job
opportunities for working in preventing lead contamination of air and water, how Lead enters air
and water, and focusing on hazards involved in working in workplaces involving Lead.
How Lead poisoning in drinking water relates to public health
Lead contaminated water is a public health issue because of how contaminated water
affects humans. Humans who drink water contaminated by Lead are prone to experiencing
increased blood pressure influencing hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, reduced kidney
functionality, and reproductive problems (Roy & Edwards, 2019). Having such issues affecting
humans causes a public health concern. The issue is a public health concern since contamination

comes from a public utility, which is water. Consumption of lead-contaminated water may cause
a health endemic. An endemic will cost Washington, D.C state government a lot of money in
treating the public. Hence, the public health department prioritizes such matters due to the
infection rates that may increase. Having contamination of Lead in water causes water scarcity,
which may cause a lot of public suffering in Washington, D.C. Based on the course outline, I
have learned that I will know to define public health problems, such as Lead in drinking water. I
will learn how Lead in drinking water affects ...
