What does flow mean in a supply chain context? Explain how material flow
relates to information flow in a supply network?
The supply chain can also be referred to as flow management. Therefore, flow
means the sequence of processes that deal with both the production and distribution of
goods. Particularly, the flexible material flow requires frequent updates based on
accurate information (Kaipia, 2009). Consequently, if the material flow is
unsupported by adequate information, waste may result in the form of capacity or
inventory.

relates to information flow in a supply network?
The supply chain can also be referred to as flow management. Therefore, flow
means the sequence of processes that deal with both the production and distribution of
goods. There are three main types of flows material, financial, and information flow
(Leng & Zailani, 2012). Material flow is the physical product’s flow from the supplier
to the consumer (Leng & Zailani, 2012). Material flow is unidirectional, while
information flow is bidirectional. Information flow refers to information flow from
the supplier to the customer and vice-versa (Leng & Zailani, 2012). On the other
hand, financial flow is when a consumer pays money to the supplier. An efficient
supply chain depends on the management and coordination of the three flows.
Characteristics in the supply chain must be balanced by choosing a
coordinating mechanism where information is utilized to support material flow.
Particularly, the flexible material/physical flow requires frequent updates based on
accurate and quality information (Kaipia, 2009). Enhanced supply chain levels are
characterized by efficient information sharing, transfer, timeliness, and availability.
Consequently, if the material flow is unsupported by adequate information, waste may
result in the form of capacity or inventory.
