The Semiotic Method Article Summary
Authors Jack Solomon and Sonia Maasik in the article claim that a person's social behavior
reflects their interest in a subconscious subject. The authors believe that signs can be applied in
attaching meaning to a condition, information, or an act. The world signifier depicts a specific
understanding of all the signs as they are interpreted. They state that the depiction of the signals is
determined by a system or code that is internal. By inquiring about signs, the semiotic method can
be applied to examine different cultures across the world. They are essential in understanding the
fundamental meaning of things people do without any concrete support of why they are doing it.
They try to develop their support for the theory in a couple of ways. First, the authors argue that
an image can possess a persuasive factor because it views an advert. Most people tend to focus
more on the pictures placed in advertisements than they focus on the advert's details. Therefore
they claim that people's message from the image is actually what is hidden in people's subconscious

Soloman, p. 57). Therefore subconscious plays a big part in these decisions that people make
because they do not fully understand why they are doing what they are doing. The authors support
their theory by explaining how stereotypical female roles are being displayed in public in the
present day. As time keeps moving, society is becoming flexible in changing things that were not
possible in the past. For instance, feministic movements have increased as women continue to fight
for their liberation. In the early days, most people believed that women were supposed to be
housewives and that stereotypical narrative stuck in both men's and women's minds. They believed
that the narrative was correct because nobody attempted to question the belief. The subconscious
is the main cause of this belief, and the more people, especially wome...
