Description

Read the following instructions carefully, and follow them thoroughly.

Topic: Art as a transformative force in the world
For this paper, you will choose one of the subtopics below to research and write about. Your arguable thesis will be a central point you wish to make about how art can function as a means of transforming lives, specifically as it relates to the subtopic you've chosen. Your supporting claims (topic sentences) and elaboration in each body paragraph will each expand on that central thesis, exploring the various ways in which this transformation can benefit lives. Your research/evidence will provide statistics, expert opinion, examples and case studies, descriptions, etc., to support your ideas.

Choose from one of these subtopics (then further brainstorm to focus on a central point you want to make [your thesis]):

  • Art in prison
  • Art in blighted neighborhoods
  • Art and elders
  • Art and veterans or people with PTSD
  • Art and the AIDS crisis
  • Art and refugees and/or survivors of war
  • Art and women in oppressive cultures
  • Art and children (Research shows that exposure to art goes beyond making children more "creative")
  • MINIMUM OF SIX VARIED (i.e. not all web sites) SOURCES of EVIDENCE in English. Sources should be appropriate for an academic paper, as well as credible and current for this topic.
  • You should include 1-2 counter-arguments along with appropriate rebuttals.
  • You must keep a folder with photocopies of your source material in case you're asked to provide proof of your evidence to verify the authenticity of your paper.
  • You must submit BOTH a hard copy AND electronic copy (via the Dropbox) by the stated deadline.
  • PLAGIARISM: All papers are screened for plagiarism. Plagiarism is a severe matter. Using others’ ideas, writing, commentary, terms, etc., REQUIRES citation in MLA format. Failure to do so is plagiarism. (See the MLA section of A Writer’s Reference.) Plagiarism also consists of having someone else write portions of your paper for you. If your paper has been found to contain plagiarism you will receive an F, the incident will be reported to the Campus Disciplinarian, and you are likely to fail the course since the Research Paper is the most heavily weighted assignment. Please do not take any risks; write a paper that consists of your own good ideas and assertions with support from credible, fully cited sources of evidence.

The main criteria are:
1) The topic should be focused, but not too narrow for a research paper;
2) The paper should approach and explore the topic in a meaningful (not shallow or trivial) way;
3) Evidence should be credible and relevant throughout.

  • Length: 7-9 pages. This does NOT include your Works Cited Page
  • -->Outline (REVISED THESIS & OUTLINE including complete TOPIC SENTENCES)

Art as a Transformative Force in The World

Introduction
Art is a diversified field of human creativity, displayed through visual, auditory or artifacts
expressing the author’s imaginative or technical skills (Oliver). This is aimed towards
appreciating culture, beauty or just emotional power. Art has also been converted into a
commercial activity hence enabling artists to earn a living. Examples of art work include
drawings, carvings, modelling, dancing, singing and many others. Art can be a talent or can
also be acquired through learning. It has changed the lives of many therefore considered to be
a transformative force in the world. This essay appreciates art and will discuss art in prison.
Art in Prison
A prison is a rehabilitation center. Inmates are not locked up necessarily to be tortured but to
be metamorphosed into useful people in the society. They are human beings like us, but in
any societal structure, guidelines come with rules. These regulations are not there to
discriminate anyone but to ensure an upright raised folk. All regards for future generations.
Basically, no one is above the law, not even those who set them. Prisons hence provide a
bench-mark when it means being under the law. Let us see how art has been utilized behind
bars to transform lives.
a. Drawing

Drawing is one of the creative works of art. Some prisoners choose to go that line and even
use it when out of prison (Johnson). It is a diverse skill too and can be applied in different
arenas. Common types of drawings include:

Tattoos

Calligraphy

Painting

These skills are unique and have a special niche in the society. For instance, tattoos have
come to be contagious especially among the youth. Trust me, they pay dearly for them. This
means someone is making ends meet because of art. In the scenario of an inmate, it means the
person is a better figure in the community. Calligraphy and painting go hand in hand and are
equally demanded by the market. In facts, paints are more expensive compared to
photographs taken by cameras. This is because a paint appreciates the creativity of the author.
b. Acting
Prisoners can gain the skill through drama and theatre (Cathy). Acting live on stage is more
lively compared to an exaggerated movie. People pay handsomely too to attend them. It is
captivating that even inmates are given a chance to show their best in the game. Luckily, it
may change a rotten mango into a new born lamb in the society. Currently, the movie
industry has really grown since ideas are so many. This means many artists are needed,
especially those who can do it heartily like an inmate.
There are so many kinds of movies. Action, drama, comedy, horror, name them. As a matter
of fact, series have come up to be so popular that one cannot wait to catch an eye on the next
episode. For a movie producer to achieve that, then there is need for a tally. Prisons are now
providing options as they can also produce one or two of their own. This a big step both for
the government and the society. It means there is still hope even for those who went astray.

Maybe they just needed a better place to be shown the way. At least in prison, I bet they
listen good.
c. Music
Music is part of our lives. Prisoners can gain these skills in their music clubs (Peter). It is a
potentially wide area too. It has several genres and hence can serve different purposes. Some
of the types of songs we here include; love songs, war songs, worship songs, dirges and many
others. At a well split level, we can classify them into; soul, pop, hiphop, reggae, riddim and
many others. This diverse categories support music to have a myriad of uses. Deeping into
them a little bit we find music as:

Entertainment. You can dance to a tune to make yourself happy. Think of how it
goes down in a party with your favorite disc jockey. It feels abandoning all the
burdens and chose to live your life.

Teaching. Songs contain information that may be useful to real life. For instance,
love songs teach us about strengthening our relationships. They may go further, to let
us appreciate each other regardless of our weaknesses.

Unity. Music is a unity tool to all people worldwide. You may find a song that is
heard across all borders hence bringing people together.

Console. Contemporary songs can console you whenever you are low. They may
give you hope to keep on pushing even if the path is not that smooth.

Praise. Worship songs praise God and give the reasons to adore Him. Patriotic songs
show love to one’s country.

prisoners can also learn how to dance by forming dance crews. This will help them in music
performance. Music is majorly an entertainment tool and therefore an artist has to keep the
audience lively during performance. Some of the...
