Write a balanced equation for the combustion of octane (C8H18) Please show how you get this.

Nov 18th, 2014

Gasoline = C8H18

Oxygen  = O2

Carbon dioxide = CO2

Water = H2O

Since 8 of C is involved we must have 8CO2

Since 18 of H is involved we must have 9 H2O

This accounts for 8*2 +9 =25 of Oxygen which is 12.5 O2

Thus

C8H18+12.5 O2 = 8CO2+ 9H2O

or

2C8H18+25O2 = 16CO2+18H2O
