Description

The review paper is an effort to analyze and pull together what we have sampled in the module. What are sociologists studying? What theories are they using? What research methods are they using? What research questions are they trying to answer? What matters of concern or “public issues” are addressed in their work? Do you see any agreements or disagreements among the authors? Here are a few guidelines for it.

  • Try to cover all the articles you and your classmates found.
  • You may include articles and materials that I posted, but you don’t have to include them; remember, these provide data, historical background, and supplementary analysis and theory.
  • Avoid writing a paper in which you sequentially summarize the collected articles; try to answer the suggested questions, pulling the articles together, comparing and contrasting them, and looking for overall patterns and conclusions.
  • Keep the length around 4 double-spaced pages.

Introduction
The emergence of mobile and internet technologies has created a paradigm shift in the
workplace environment. The growth in these technologies coupled with internet connectivity has
allowed organizations to distribute productivity across workers by employing a new shift in the
way employees work. The availability of computing devices as well as connectivity technologies
and the ubiquity of intelligence devices in multiple environments has further promoted the
growth of remote workplaces and created a new shift in the way organizational employees
deliver their work. These technologies has not only facilitated remote workplaces but have also
created flexible work options that expands beyond the traditional workplace.
Organizations that have embraced the new shift in workplace modality have been able to
realize sustainable growth by downsizing the physical workplace environment and expanding
remote workplaces. However, to most of the organizations, these new approaches to work had
been auxiliary avenues for supporting exceptional life events such medical emergencies and
disabilities. Nonetheless, the Covid-19 global pandemic has redefined the workplace today and
force many organizations to embrace remote workplaces as the new normal and not just as a
supplementary work style. Against this backdrop, this paper provides a review of the
perspectives of different sociologists in regards to technology and the workplace.
Critical review
The integration of technology in the workplace is slowing taking center stage in most
organization. However, different sociologists have different perspective when it comes to this
new shift. Rizzuto, 2011 in his study on age and technology innovation in the workplace argues
that two workplace trends will become increasingly important in the years to come. These trends

include reliance on information technology and the workforce aging. The millennials have a
positive attitudes regarding workplace technological innovation while baby boomers are slow in
the adoption of the new technologies. However, the drastic changes in the workplace
environment is slowly taking center stage leaving the aging workforce with no option but to try
to adopt the changing technology for them to remain relevant in the workplace. Mamaghani,
2006 shared the same perspective, however, according to Mamaghani, 2006, technological
advancement within the workplaces have enabled organizations to improve their operational
efficiencies, reduce cost, increase their global exposure, increase communication, and most
importantly advance their competitive advantage within the market.
Technology integration within the workplace has not only provided a framework through
which organizations are able to save on cost, but has also created an important avenue for
increasing efficiency. In the United States, almost every organization has advanced in the U.S of
information technology in their workplaces. I...
