1. Who are the stakeholders in this case and what are their stakes? What are the
ethical issues?
There are many notable stakeholders with regards to the Rana Plaza collapse in
Bangladesh. The major stakeholders include the Bangladeshi government, the building owner,
multinational corporations, trade unions, civil society, IMF, World Bank, regional blocs like
European Union, US government, consumer protection organizations, and the general public.
Despite the country’s ready-made garment industry contributing nearly 80% of its exports and
providing employment to almost four millions as well as supporting other 25 million Bangladesh
citizens. From the case study the garment industry faces serious ethical issues for instance, lack
of workplace or occupational safety and security, poor working conditions, forced overtime,
physical assault, low or unpaid wages, and anti-trade union strategies.
2. Based on your study of the building collapse in Bangladesh, which party or parties
do you think are responsible and why?
The most culpable parties include the government, factor or sweatshops owners, and the
foreign retailers. The factory owners pay less wage and force employees to work overtime in
poor working conditions with no trade union representation. The Bangladeshi government is
very weak with regards to enforcing regulatory standards. The EU and USA government were
not doing enough to enhance the conditions. Majority of the factories were susceptible to
collapse. The multi-national companies were ignorant of the violation of the global standards
related to workplace safety along the value chain. The morals behind outsourcing suppress

fundamental human rights among other sacrosanct principles. The corruption, religious
