George Méliès was a pioneer, really one of the founding experimenters, with what would much later become "Visual Effects (VFX). So important and interesting are his films, he even has a youtube site with over 2100 subscribers some 120 years after he created these masterpieces:

Do some research on what the "mindset" was of a European as they face a new century. Think about the technology compared to the magic we see now in modern VFX, what do you find corny? Enduring? The film that I chose was entitled, “Card Party” wherein there are three men who are
seated around a table while playing cards. The movie was short but it showed the
important elements of the film. As you watch the movie, you will see how the three
men are interacting with each other. You will see them talk and laugh which will make
you conclude that these three men are close friends even without the dialogue. The
movie also featured a few female servants who were serving them beverages and
snacks. Considering that this was made during 1896, I’m quite impressed with how
he handled the movie. It was consistent and it was easy to understand. George
