In addition to your passport a visa is also required prior to arriving in China. To
ensure you have the appropriate documentation needed for your travels, Green Fabric will
reimburse these fees. Please note, if you arrive in China and you do not have a visa or your
passport does not have six months of validity
remaining, you will be fined and immediately
deported. “You must also have a valid visa to exit
China, and you must leave China before the expiration of the listed duration of stay. If you
overstay in China, you may be detained and fined. If your visa has expired or will expire before
you can depart China, you must apply for a visa extension from the Entry/Exit Bureau before
attempting to leave the country. Requests for extensions from the Entry/Exit Bureau can take
some time and may not be expedited to meet your travel needs” (U.S. Embassy, 2021). Once in
China, if your passport or visa is stolen, you must apply for a new document at the U.S. Embassy
or nearest Consulate. To receive a new visa, you must file a police report at the police station
nearest to where the theft occurred. You may also be directed to file a report at the local
Entry/Exit Bureau (Country Security, 2019). Information on how to obtain a visa has been
provided below.

Geography of Beijing
Beijing is not only the capital of China, but it is also the political and historical center of
the country, as well. Located in the northeastern part of the country, the area of Beijing was an
important location throughout several Chinese dynasties spanning thousands of years due to its
8
Green Fabric, Inc.
military and trading capabilities and remains a major city today due to its urban construction,
knack for tourism, and commercialization that has attracted global businesses (Bonavia, 2021).
The northern China plain in which Beijing is located has a robust topography, with several
mountain ranges and plains that lead to geographical pooling of water and drainage issues (Asia
Society, n.d.).
History of Beijing
The city stands just south of the Great Wall of China (pictured above), a fortification
constructed over the course of 2,000 years for the purpose of keeping several groups of
barbarians out of the Chinese empire (Larmer, 2008). To this day, it remains one of man-made’s
greatest wonders of the world and it is easily accessible for residents and visitors of Beijing. As
mentioned, China was ruled by dynasties for thousands of years until the twentieth century. After
the two world wars had passed, communism won out and the People’s Republic of China was
9
Green Fabric, Inc.
born. That said, empirical history in China lives on in many aspects of daily life such as art,
architecture, and overall cultural life. For example, Chinese New Year is a long-standing
tradition dating from Chinese history that is a fifteen-day holiday that businesses observe
annually (Bonavia, 2021). Chinese New Year celebrations are considered to be some of the most
culturally significant events in the region, if not world, as shown below.
Climate
As Beijing is located in the northern part of China, the city sees all of the four seasons.
While residents endure a cold, dry winter, they also see long spring and fall seasons with a hot
summer that bring some monsoon rain up the Chinese coast (Beijing Facts, n.d.). The climate
can be viewed as similar to that of New York City, although dryer in the winter months and more
precipitous in the summer months. China operates on the metric system, which measures
temperature in Celsius, which differs from the American Fahrenheit. The coldest Beijing
typically falls is to -4 degrees Celsius in January, which is 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmest
temperatures typically climb are in July, which usually tops out at 26 degrees Celsius, or 79
degrees Fahrenheit (Kelly, 2021).
Economy
Beijing is known as one of the oldest cities in the world with history dating back 3,000
years (Beijing Facts, 2021). In 2019, the nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of the Chinese
capital, Beijing, amounted to approximately 3.54 trillion yuan, compared to about 3 trillion yuan
in 2018 (Textor, 2020). The city is home to some of the well-known fortune 500 companies.
Beijing has always been a comparatively service industry oriented comprised of both private
companies and government agencies. The city’s unemployment rate as of 2018 was 1.4%
(Textor, 2020). “According to an IMF forecast, GDP growth in China will slow down to about
5.8 percent in 2022, depicting a decrease of nearly four percentage points from 9.5 percent in
10
Green Fabric, Inc.
2011. Quarterly growth data published by the National Bureau of Statistics indicated 4.9 percent
GDP growth for the third quarter of 2020 (Textor, 2020).”
Communication
Internet/Phone
Beijing has three state-owned network providers: Those network providers are China
Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. “China Mobile is considered to have better
coverage nationwide, while China Unicom has the most
comprehensive Internet and mobile data packages. China
Telecom is less popular with users largely because fewer
unlocked iPhone models are compatible with its 4G LTE
network” (Chen, 2016).
Different internet and phone bundle options will be available at each company. Estimated
costs are 1,480 RMB (229 U.S. dollars) per year for 4MB/20MB speeds; 1,780 RMB (276 U.S.
dollars) for 50MB; or 1,980 RMB (307 U.S. dollars) for 100MB. Internet can also be paid in
monthly installments, but prices will be higher. For example, 140 RMB instead of 123 RMB per
month for 4MB (Chen, 2016). All internet sites will not be available in China. A VPN will be
needed to access sites like Facebook and Google. This is due to censorship of sites implemented
in certain parts of China. Some parts of China restrict the use of sites that allow free interaction
between people. This link will provide a list of blocked sites in China.
Mail
Postal services in Beijing are state-run by Beijing Post and a wide range of postal
services are provided. Post offices are usually open between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. Please

Transportation
Beijing is one of the largest and most important transportation hubs in China. China’s
largest airport is in Beijing, and the city has an extensive rail system as well as road
transportation. However, the city is a densely populated area with all forms of transport being
very crowded during rush hours (8 am and 6 pm). For this reason, the subway will be the most
time efficient.
Green Fabric will issue a Transportation Smart Card and a Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei
Transportation Card upon your arrival in Beijing. The Transportation Smart Card “can be used
by everyone without registration on all subway lines, city buses, taxis, Airport Express Train, S2
trains to Badaling Great Wall, and public bicycles” (Travel China, 2021). The Beijing-Tianjin-

Hebei Transportation Card, also called Jingjinji Card, “works for dedicated city buses in Beijing,
including all routes departing from the Railway Stations, and Dang-dang Sightseeing Bus Line 1
and Line 2, public buses in Tianjin Binhai New Area and Wuqing District, and all buses in cities
of Hebei Province (Travel China, 2021). Transportation fees associated with these cards will
need to be submitted once a month for reimbursement.

Housing
When starting your housing search, it is important to decide which neighborhood district
is more convenient based on your preference to be close to work or near your children’s
educational institution. Beijing is divided into multiple neighborhood districts, for instance
Dongheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang (the expat quarter), Haidian (the student district), are favored
more than others due to their accessibility to administrative services and other heavily utilized
conveniences (Accommodation in Beijing, 2019). There are many different housing options such
13
Green Fabric, Inc.
as regular or standard apartments, high-end apartment complexes, serviced apartments, villas,
and traditional houses. The most common housing option for expatriates are regular apartments
(also known as compounds) which can be rented for at least one year with an option to renew
(Summers, 2020). Renters must be careful when doing their research and beware of descriptions
that say, “standard apartments”, this could mean a spacious all-inclusive rental or a tiny, dark
studio with minimum amenities (Accommodation in China, 2021). High-end and serviced
apartments are more expensive, have a shorter rental term, but offer a variety of amenities. The
last option is traditional houses and villas which are often located in exclusive areas outside of
the city and is the most expensive housing option.
In an effort to alleviate the stress and overwhelming situation that comes with relocating,
we have partnered with a local realtor, Joanna Realtor, to provide a few housing options with
brief descriptions below that may accommodate your needs. Please also keep in mind security
deposits are generally two to three months’ rents and a down payment of one month’s rent is
usually also required (Black, 2020).

services can sometimes be included in the rent, but check with the compound you have chosen. If
you would like to do further research to find a home or apartment in Beijing check out

you would like to make housing accommodations outside of this rental agency

Utilities
Some utilities in Beijing are provided on a pre-paid basis. You will be given a smart card
that will be inserted into a meter inside your apartment or villa. When the balance on your card
becomes low, the meter will blink to alert you.
•
Central Heating is included in the price of rent. The heat is turned on around November 15th
and turned off around March 15th. This may vary according to temperatures. “Most
apartments have air conditioning units with heat settings that can be used to fill the gap
between the onset of cold and the arrival of central heating. The latter compounds Beijing’s
dryness by stripping moisture from the air, so be sure to invest in a couple of humidifiers”
(Chen, 2016).
•
Natural Gas may be included in your rent. If it is not, it can be paid in person, online, at the
back, at the post office, or with a smart card. Gas costs are 2.28RBM or 3.23RBM (0.35 or
$0.50 USD) depending on where you live.
•
Water “An employee from the water company will periodically come by your house to
check the water meter. They may ask for payment on the spot – in which case you should
always ask for a receipt – or give you an invoice, which can be paid online or at the bank”
(Chen, 2016). Water is expensive at around 5RMB ($0.77 USD) per cubic meter.
•
Electricity is tracked by meters in the home and administered by State Grid. You can pay for
electricity by using “online on platforms like Alipay and WeChat Wallet. Electricity can also
be purchased in person, using specialized machines located in State Grid offices, select banks
(Bank of Beijing, ICBC, China Merchants Bank, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China,
China Everbright Bank), and convenience stores” (Chen, 2016). The cost of electricity varies
but is usually around 0.5 RBM ($0.07 USD) per kilowatt hour.

Before leaving for Beijing, check to see if your electric devices use 110/220 volts and if
your plugs have two prongs. If not, you will need an electric adapter to plug electronics into
Beijing’s electrical sockets. You will also need a converter. The electricity standard in Beijing is
220 volts and 50 hertz.
Politics
As discussed in previous sections, the People’s Republic of China is a Communist nation,
which was formed by Mao Zedong in the mid-twentieth century. While Zedong’s communist
China is different than what China is today, the government has major influence and control over
business, land, and many other aspects of life within the country (BBC, 2021). As a result, there
is bound to be some stark differences in daily life for individuals moving from a democratic
nation like the United States of America. While we absolutely want to ensure you and your
family are aware of these differences, it is first important to point out a couple of myths. While
tensions are sometimes high between the United States and China due to political or economic
reasons, Chinese residents rarely show outward animosity towards Americans. As American
expat Richelle Gamlam, who spent years in China, reflects, “In the US, we hear so much about
China's oppressive government and human rights abuse that most people (for example, my
parents) are under the impression that the Chinese government may imprison you for even a
minor transgression. I can tell you right now that as an expat, this will not happen to you.
The government couldn't care less that you have a VPN or that you say negative things about
China on your personal blog. Unless you're The Guardian, New York Times, or BBC, the
18
Green Fabric, Inc.
Chinese government doesn't really care what you write about, and frankly, most Chinese people
are not reading things in English anyway” (Gamlam, 2016).
As a result of these differing political ideologies, China has vastly different freedoms of
expression, religion, and areas such as LGBTI. In today’s highly technological and social media
driven world, the Chinese government places constant surveillance on the internet and has flat
out banned Twitter, Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Google within the country
(Hawkins, 2019). While the rising rates of Christianity in China is being fairly welcomed by the
government, tolerance of LGBTI issues are not. Constant censorship and denial of same-sex
marriage solidifies this as one of the stickiest subjects in the country (Amnesty International,
2019). Overall, the Chinese prefer to avoid any talk about subjects that may be of embarrassment
to China, such as geographic or economic conflicts, political leaders. religious traditions, or more
(Kelly, 2021). This can be a long list that include topics outside of politics, such as death. Since
the United States and China have been on a roller coaster ride of political relations for years,
marked most notably by an ongoing trader war, this is a topic that is best to be avoided. While
the transition of the United States presidency may help to ease tensions in the near future, it is
encouraged that you keep up with all news concerning China and the United States.
Health and Medical Services
As you and your family embark on your journey to Beijing, we understand there are concerns
regarding healthcare. Although we hope that you and your family stay healthy during this
experience in Beijing, we want to ensure you are prepared for the differences in health care.
Fortunately, Beijing has a wide variety of modern western style hospitals and medical offices
that will be available to you (U.S. Embassy, n.d.). You may want to contact your current
insurance provider to see if they provide coverage in Beijing. You will be relieved to know that
dental care is very reputable in Beijing and most of the dentists in the city speak English
19
Green Fabric, Inc.
(Expatfinder.com, n.d.). The dental work is also a considerable amount cheaper then western
dental work (Expatfinder.com, n.d.).
Most medical facilities in Beijing require foreigners to provide a down payment before
any service is provided (U.S. Embassy, n.d.). Most of the hospitals to accept American credit
cards with the exception of American Express. Please note that health care is very different to
what you are accustomed to experiencing. If you choose to travel throughout China most rural
hospitals and offices may refuse to treat you (U.S. Embassy, n.d.). Also, all ambulances in the
country are usually not equipped with medical and equipment and the staff has little to no
medical training requiring most to provide their own transportation to the hospital. Here at Green
Fabric Inc. we want to ensure you are taken care of which is why we will offer you company
BlueCross BlueShield which has a long list of worldwide network providers and cloth masks to
not only protect you from Covid-19 but also the sometimes poor air quality in the major cities
(U.S. Embassy, n.d.).
Below is a list of medical facilities that will be able to tend to you and your medical and
mental health needs families. Mental health is a recent development throughout China but rest
assured that Beijing has your family covered.

Emergency Services There is minimal risk from crime in Beijing. China’s capital has a
population of more than 21.5 million people and is
generally safe when compared to other global
cities. The presence of police and security
personnel throughout the city serves to deter most
serious crime, while petty crime occurs with some
regularity. The most common criminal incidents,
which are minor, tend to occur in areas frequented by tourists, at shopping centers, and on
crowded public transportation during peak hours (Country Security, 2019). While violent crime
is not common in Beijing, it is important to be
aware of the following according to The U.S.
Department of State.
•
Demonstrations may quickly turn violent.
•
Domestic unrest and terrorism can occur.
21
Green Fabric, Inc.
•
Business disputes between U.S. citizens and Chinese business partners can sometimes result
in physical confrontation or kidnapping. Go straight to the police if you feel threatened or
relocate to a public place.
•
Be alert to criminal schemes, such as:
o
“Tourist Tea” Scams: Young Chinese invite visitors out to tea and leave them with an
exorbitant bill.
o
Phone Scams: Individuals within China receive telephone calls where the callers pose
as police officers and request a funds transfer to resolve an identity theft or money
laundering investigation. Contact the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) to verify the
caller’s identity.
o
“Black Cabs”: Be cautious when using taxi services, especially at airports. Avoid
unlicensed “black cabs,” insist that the driver use the meter, and get a receipt. Have
the name of your destination written in Chinese characters and ask the driver to
remove the bags from the trunk before you get out of the taxi and before you pay.
o
Counterfeit Currency: Counterfeit currency is a significant concern in China.
Carrying small bills or using exact change, particularly in taxis, can help protect you.
Use only ATMs at trusted financial institutions (U.S. Department of State, 2021).
If you are the victim of a crime, you should contact the American Citizen Services (ACS)
unit at the Embassy or Consulate for assistance. If you need immediate help, the local emergency

Banking and Currency
The currency in China is called the Renminbi which stands for the people’s currency.
You may have heard of it being referred to as yuan which is unit of measurement like we use the
dollar (Summers, 2020). During your time in China you will probably find the need to use their
currency or open a Chinese credit card. Not all places in China accept western credit cards which
may require you to change your payment methods (Summers, 2020).
You likely receive your current paycheck through direct deposit to your current bank
account. Fear not, you will not have to change you banking to China entirely if you do not wish
to make the complete transfer. Most expats open a Chinese bank account transferring funds from
their western account. Having a Chinese account makes it easier to pay bills as well as using
their payment apps that are widely used throughout the country. These apps are, WeChat Wallet
or Didi Chuxing. To open a bank account in China you will need a passport, proof of residence,
initial deposit, and a work permit. International deposits generally take 1 to 4 business days.
China’s currency value is based on the value of the American Dollar. When the dollar
falls so does the yuan. This happens through exporting as Chinese companies are paid in the
dollar and they deposit that money into the People’s Bank of China who exchanges the money
for Chinese currency (Amadeo, 2020). They then use that American money to buy bonds in the
U.S. making them the largest foreign holder of U.S. treasury notes (Amadeo, 2020). In Beijing
you will find many places willing to exchange American currency, please be cautious and always
verify their exchange rate with an exchange rate app or rely on the People’s Bank of China. The

following banks are not only having a reputation for being trustworthy but they also have
English services; Bank of China (BOC), China Construction Bank (CCB), Agricultural Bank of
China (ABC), and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) (Summers, 2020).
Shopping
In Beijing, you and your family will enjoy all the shopping that you experience in your
home country and more. Beijing is home to some world class shopping and is known for its
Mega Malls (Vahle, n.d.). When you are shopping be sure
to check out these popular spots to fulfill your shopping
needs; Silk Street, Hongqiao Pearl Market, Panjiayuan
Antiques Market, Maliandao Market, and Tianyi
Wholesale Market (TravelandLeisure.com, n.d.).
For everyday grocery and household shopping Beijing has everything you need. A
familiar store you may have heard of is Walmart
Supercenter. Located in Beijing, it will have everyday
local and western items that you will require during
your stay. Whether you decide to shop at a local
market or a chain store you will be enthralled with the
culture of Beijing. Check the list below for local stores for which you can shop for everyday
items (Vahle, n.d.).
Jinkelong Supermarket
This Chinese supermarket chain has almost anything you might desire. It helps, also, that it is
very cheap. The market also has a website and you can order your groceries online, but it's all in
Chinese.
24
Green Fabric, Inc.
Carrefour Supermarket
Carrefour sells clothes, furniture, and appliances, making it a good first stop if you're new to
town and on the hunt for some essentials.
Walmart Supermarket
Walmart has plenty of stores over town, with variable Western selections. Although they do not
have all the western amenities, you will still find what you are looking for.
Ikea
Definitely a go to for furniture buying, Ikea stocks everything you've come to expect elsewhere
around the world, and more.
Cuisine
Depending on where you live in the United States, chances are you have had your fair
share of Chinese food such as sesame chicken, egg rolls, General Tsao’s chicken, and more.
Cuisine in China, however, is not exactly as it is advertised in the United States. Chinese cuisine
is deeply rooted in cultural history, such as Confucianism and Taoism, and is an integral part of
all family and friend get togethers (China.org.cn, 2021). From a Confucian standpoint, Chinese
cuisine does not rely on taste from individual ingredients, rather the preferred method is to
combine many to produce a more flavorful food. Taoism contributed the use of vegetables and
similar ingredients into their cuisine, in an effort to stimulate a healthier lifestyle.
You and your family will have ample opportunity to dine out in the city of Beijing, but
before you do please keep in mind that there are nuances in doing so as compared with Western
culture. Of note, tipping is not only not expected in China, it can also be viewed as offensive
(Rodgers, 2019). So, the important question, where should you and your family go and what
should you order? There are plenty of options for all palates:
25
Green Fabric, Inc.
Quanjude
This restaurant provides some of the purest examples of what was
previously discussed regarding Confucian and Taoist beliefs. With a
rich history (opened in 1864!) and a dedication to fresh ingredients
and authentic Chinese cuisine, their Peking roast duck is a Beijing staple, an entrée that comes
out to about 238 yen, or $36 USD (Lu, 2018). Their menus are written in both Mandarin and
English, and the above link can be toggled to English if using Google Chrome as your browser.
The location cannot be easier to get to – it is right in the middle of the city.
Huguo Temple Snack
Located just northwest of city center, Huguo Temple
Snack offers a different ambience than Quanjude. Known
as a “snack bar,” Huguo offers several dessert options, as
pictured below. Furthermore, Huguosi Street has several
similar boutiques and snack bars that allow for an
enjoyable day trip to head up and down the street exploring.
Cultural shocks are expected when expatriates arrive in their host country, with
(rightfully so) a lot of time and energy spent addressing language barriers, cultural differences,
and spatial distance from the homeland. One slightly less thought about area is the adjusting to
the cuisine. Thankfully, China has thousands (and we mean thousands) of American chain
restaurants such as McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks, and at the rate these restaurants
are being opened there are no plans of slowing down (Wei, 2018). These fast-food chains may
26
Green Fabric, Inc.
fill your craving for American food for a short time, but if you need something more substantial,
below are a few options that may help your family pay homage to the homeland.
Tim’s Texas Bar-B-Q
East of the city center, Tim’s offers exactly as the name states, Texas style BBQ, a great escape
for any Americans looking for southern comfort food.
Steaks & Eggs
Missing a more traditional American breakfast? Steaks & Eggs may be your salvation. Also, just
east of city center, take this review directly from a patron from TripAdvisor, who says “Steaks &
Eggs is the place to go if you’re in Beijing and in need of a fix for a real North American
breakfast. The food is inexpensive, delicious and overseen by master Chef Paul, who is also a
great source for local information.”
Religion/Places of Worship
The People’s Republic of China recognizes five major religions. Those religions include
Taoism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, and Protestantism.
However, there are also other folk beliefs recognized by the
government. “The Chinese Constitution guarantees citizens
freedom of religious belief and the protection of normal
religious activities. The Constitution prohibits making use of
religion to engage in activities that disrupt public order, impair the health of citizens, or interfere
with the educational system of the State and provides that religious bodies and religious affairs
are not subject to any foreign domination” (Religion White Paper, 2018).
27
Green Fabric, Inc.
The People’s Republic of China recognizes many religions, but there are also banned
religious and spiritual groups. These groups are considered
evil cults. Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that blends
aspects of Buddhism, Daoism, and traditional qigong
exercise, and The Church of Almighty God (also known as
Eastern Lightning), a quasi-Christian group, are officially
banned (Law Library of Congress, 2018).
In Beijing, there are Christian churches of several denominations, and at least one will
hold a weekly service in English. However, most expatriate Christians will attend one of the two
Christian fellowships, with foreign priests that run services on Sundays. According to Chinese
law, only a foreign passport can attend religious meetings led by
overseas teachers and priests. Attendance at these fellowships,
therefore, is only allowed on presentation of a non-Chinese
passport. Please note that it is illegal for expatriates to proselytize
about religion in China (Reloc8, 2018).
Below is a list of legal and accepted places of worship in Beijing.

Culture, Sports, and Holidays
China has one of the oldest cultures in the entire world and many
of their traditions from the old world are still present today (Zimmerman,
2017). The country’s government is officially atheist however, they are
tolerant of only Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Protestantism (Zimmerman, 2017).
Any other religion is considered illegal. As you explore Beijing and other parts of China you will
notice that different parts of the country as well as different neighborhoods in Beijing have their
own unique culture and community laws (Zimmerman, 2017). Due to China’s rich history they
are known for the art dating hundreds of years.
Popular Chinese sports include badminton, basketball, soccer, and table tennis.
Badminton and table tennis also known as ping pong has been a staple in Chinese sports for a
long time and has experienced a resurgence in popularity (Klingelhofer, 2017). Although many
westernized things are banned basketball and soccer are extremely popular and both have highly
competitive professional leagues in the country (Klingelhofer, 2017). Beijing has many different
professional sports teams which you can visit with your family! Also, if you or a family member
love to run, then you will love Beijing. Running has become the most popular sport for
29

recreational athletes (Klingelhofer, 2017). Have fun running while getting accustomed to the
Chinese scenery.
Welcome to the Year of the Ox! Every year around this time year varying on days is the
Chinese New Year which is a big event every year (Zimmerman, 2017).
You will also have fun in the springtime for the Lunar New Year which
is a 15-day festival! This celebration is accompanied with Chinese
cuisine to cleanse the body and you will see many fireworks and dancers dressed as dragons
(Zimmerman, 2017. National holidays are heavily regulated by the government expect to not
work or have support from our Chinese employees on national holidays. Below is a list of
nationally recognized Chinese holidays:
Business Etiquette
In China, they have a saying that men without face is a like a tree without bark. Face is
all encompassing to how you interact with fellow company members to how you interact with
potential partners (Summers, 2006). Failing to have face can prevent deals from working out and
have a huge impact on our company (Summers, 2006). It all starts with a simple handshake like
you are typically accustomed too however, you will want your Chinese counterpart initiate the
gesture (Todaytranslation.com, n.d.). When addressing superiors and those in respectable
positions, it is necessary to address them as Mr./Ms./Mrs. When presenting your business card
30
Green Fabric, Inc.
present with two hands to the recipient (Todaytranslation.com, n.d.). Here are some quick tips
for business etiquette in China:
•
Be well prepared for the meeting. Have at least 20 copies of your proposal ready for
handing out. Note that presentation materials should be only in black and white.
•
Small talk is considered particularly important at the beginning of a meeting.
•
They prefer to establish a strong relationship before closing a deal, so you might have to
meet up several times to build your rapport just to achieve your objectives.
•
People in China usually enter the meeting room in hierarchical order. So be careful – they
will assume that the first of you walking in the room is the head of the delegation!
•
Business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday (Todaytranslation.com,
n.d.).
Schools and Dependent Care
With the vast differences in language and culture between the United States and China,
much consideration needs to be put into public versus private and international schools in China.
While options in Beijing are plentiful, there is a growing trend that expats are opting for public
schools over private schools as of late. Two key reasons for this are high tuition fees for private
or international schools (Beijing is one of the most expensive cities in the world for international
education) and the thought that children will learn Mandarin quicker being immersed with
Chinese children (Yau, 2019). Below are options with brief descriptions for both public and
international schools:
Keystone Academy is an international school
ranging from ages 5 to 18 that teaches both
English and Mandarin. Annual tuition ranges
from 250,000-387,500 RMB per year, which
31
Green Fabric, Inc.
is the equivalent of $38,700-60,000 USD (International Schools Database, 2021). There is an
option to either board students or commute daily, both of which provide ample options to
participate in extracurriculars in the sports and arts (Keystone Academy, 2021). The academy
is located in the Shunyi District, which is just northwest of the city.
Tsingshua International School is another international school that focuses strictly on
American curriculum, for those who choose to not
have their children so focused on Chinese language
and curriculum. This school ranges from ages 6 to
18 and tuition fees range from 172,000-199,000
RMB, or $26,600-30,800 (International Schools
Database, 2021). This school boasts its activity within the community through community
building trips and Chinese culture trip programs, as well as having over 40 active student
clubs (Tsinghua International School, 2021). Tsingshua International School is located on the
northern outskirts of Beijing.
Beijing High School Four is one of the most prominent public high schools in Beijing.
Located in the heart of the city, just west of Qianhi Lake, this public school is a much
cheaper option at 25,000 RMB per semester, or $3,800 USD. Compared with the previous
two schools, Beijing High School Four is more likely
to immerse your children into Chinese culture and
society.
While I understand that both of your children are
high school age, there are plenty of options for
nannies and au pairs available. A resource for those
options is https://www.greataupair.com/.

Support
The U.S. Embassy provides support and serves as a bilateral mission between the United
States and China (U.S. Embassy & Consulates in China). They encourage all United States
citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). “The Smart Traveler
Enrollment Program is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to
receive the latest security updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Enrolling in
STEP will help the U.S. Embassy contact you and provide assistance during an emergency and,
if your family or friends in the U.S. are having difficulty contacting you with urgent news while
you are traveling, the information provided to STEP can be used to reach you.” (U.S. Embassy
Beijing, 2021). The U.S. Embassy can provide emergency assistance, local resources, passports
and citizenship, and federal programs. A detailed list of these services can be viewed by

Repatriation
Before you depart for Beijing, you will meet with your parent-company sponsor, Mark
Miller, our Director of Distribution & Logistics. Mark will keep you apprised of all happenings
here at headquarters, such as staff changes, company initiatives, milestones, and more.
Furthermore, Mark will keep you informed of general New York City and United States news
that may be of interest of you, such as pop culture, politics, sports, and the like. We highly
encourage you to set your laptop and computer home pages to a news outlet to keep yourself
informed, and if possible, listen to brief daily news podcasts when possible, such as NPR’s Up
First. As we will discuss with you during your upcoming orientation, once you successfully
complete your expatriate assignment and return to New York City, there will be at least two
34
Green Fabric, Inc.
tracks for you to choose from for your next position. Green Fabric, Inc. These tracks will either
be to continue in our quality assurance division in a more senior-level role, a position in our
international operations division to help grow our burgeoning global footprint, or in an executive
development track, where you would be exposed to several different areas of the company in a
rotational program in an effort to position you for a future position as an executive with Green
Fabric, Inc.
During your assignment, you will be granted two weeks per year of paid home leave
(which include travel expenses back to New York City). Before your expat assignment comes to
a close, we will provide you with a pre-return orientation which will outline what you missed
when you were away from the United States, both from a company and a cultural standpoint. A
few months before you return, HR will contact you directly and we will have decided on a
position for you in one of the aforementioned tracks (a decision in which you will have an
important voice in). Once you arrive back at headquarters, your first week will be similar to your
first week here at Green Fabric, however, we will have an open luncheon for all at the company
to join to celebrate your return, congratulate you on a job well done, and learn from your
experience in Beijing. Please feel free to contact me at any time regarding questions about this
process.

Tax Offsets
•
An official tax treaty between the United States and Japan has been established to
help expatriate taxpayers decide which country they are required to pay taxes to,
when taxes are owed, and avoid dual taxation.
•
The above referenced tax treaty also has provisions that allow expatriates’ income
taxes to be calculated and withheld based on tax laws in the United States.
•
Think Tank Technology will utilize tax equalization to make the issue of federal
income taxes less of a liability for our expatriate employees.
•
Our tax equalization process is done to simplify the tax process, guarantee expatriate
employees are taxed fairly, and ensure these employees are in compliance with the
applicable tax laws in both countries.
•
This will be accomplished through the deduction of taxes that would normally be
abstracted from your paycheck in the United States. Our HR department will then
pay your applicable United States taxes as well as the taxes due to Japan.

•
There have also been other provisions made to ensure expatriates are not victims of
dual taxation. First, there is an applicable tax credit that allows tax on residual
income to be condensed based on taxes paid to foreign governments. Additionally,
there is an exclusion on foreign housing provision that permits extra exclusions from
expatriates’ income for some amounts paid to cover the cost of household expenses
while living in a foreign country. Lastly, the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion
provision allows an individual to omit 107,000 USD in earned income from any
foreign source.

Geography
•
One of the most unique features of Japan is the fact that it is comprised of several
thousand islands. Tokyo is located on one of the largest of those islands, Honshu. With a
current population of 37,340,000, Tokyo is regarded as the most inhabited city in the
world. In fact, it is home to over 30% of Japan’s population. This large population is
likely due to the beauty and splendor it beholds.
•
Tokyo is essentially divided into three major geographical areas: The 23 Special-ward
area, the islands, and the Tama area. The 23 Special-ward area covers around 627 square
kilometers and is the economic, political, and cultural center of Tokyo. This is where
most of the government, corporate, and commercial businesses are located. Tokyo’s
islands encompass about 404 square kilometers and has a plentiful ecological
environment with a multitude of marine resources. This area is one of the city’s most
historical and cultural settings. Lastly, there is Tokyo’s largest geographical region, the
Tama area, which spreads out about 1,160 square kilometers. This is an urbanized,

industrial region that also has a beautiful natural environment. In this district you will
find a host of beautiful lakes, rivers, and botanical settings.
•
The Sea of Japan separates the Asian mainland from the Japanese archipelago and
plays a major factor in Japan’s rainy climate. Tokyo’s climate typically remains mild
with sunny winters and humid, rainy summers. However, typhoons often strike areas
of the country each year throughout late summer and Tokyo could be affected.
•
As a result of Japan’s location along continental plates, earthquakes have been known
to frequently occur. However, most of these occurrences are not severe.
•
Japan contains many mountains, forests, and hot springs with a host of these in or
around the Tokyo region. Therefore, if enjoying the beauty and excitement nature
has to offer is your thing, you and your family are in for a treat. Take a trip to one of
Tokyo’s most relaxing hot springs, the Onsen, and enjoy a tranquil day with your
family. Japan is also home to one of the world’s most beautiful mountains, Mt. Fuji.
Often regarded as the symbol of Japan, this beauty is a must see. Lastly, the Koajirono-Mori Forest, is one of the most serene natural environmental settings the world has
to offer and is excellent for hiking and observing unique species.

Economy
•
Japan’s economy was sent into a major recession for a short period in 2020 due to the
Coronavirus pandemic. However, it is progressively strengthening, and economists
expect it to fully recover swiftly.
•
Japan maintains a high-level economic system with a freedom score of 73.3,
establishing it as the 3oth freest in the 2020 index. Japan has also experienced a great
level of progress in fiscal health.
•
Out of 42 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan ranks at number 8 with a total
score exceeding domestic and global averages.
•
To deter future fiscal issues, Japan’s government is focused on reducing pension costs
by introducing social security reforms. In addition, there has been special attention
given to establishing fundamental structural reforms to eliminate cronyism and
encourage free enterprise.
•
This country also operates using reasonable, balanced legal and regulatory systems.
•
The Unemployment rate is currently 2.9% accompanied by a 1% inflation rate. These
extremely low rates truly depict the progressive nature of this high-power economy.
•
As Japan continues to become more innovative, computer technology continues to be
a growing industry with new opportunities for growth continually arising for
companies such as Think Tank Technology.

Political History and Current Issues
•
Japan’s political system is based on the Japanese Constitution which was enacted
after the end of WW II.
•
The imperial family used to hold all power but after the war they currently carry out
ceremonial duties.
•
The imperial family also hosts diplomats from foreign countries.
•
The prime minister of Japan is the face of Japan’s governmental affairs. They are not
elected but appointed by the Diet.
•
Japan also has a Cabinet which is appointed by the Prime Minister.
•
The Diet of Japan consists of an upper house, The House of the Councilors, and a
lower house.
•
The Diet’s functions are to appoint a prime minister, approve the national budget,
ratify treaties, creating and implementing amendments to the constitution.
•
Japan also has a house of representatives (similar to the United States) which consists
of 480 members who serve 4-year terms.
•
Japan also has a supreme court.
•
Currently, the conservative leaning Liberal Democratic Party has held strong
influence since 1955.
•
Japan’s current Prime Minister is Yoshihide Suga, 71. He is a farmer’s son who
worked his way through college and climbed the political ladder through sheer grit
and determination.

Religions and Religious Freedoms
•
The two most widely practiced religions in Japan are Buddhism and Shinto.
Thankfully, these two religions have been able to co-exist amicably for centuries and
are often practiced together.
•
There is also a population of citizens that actively practice Christianity,
Confucianism, the Islamic faith, and other religions.
•
With Buddhism and Shinto being the primary religions, it is extremely likely that you
and your family will see some of the ceremonial shrines and temples in various areas
of Tokyo.
•
Most major religious ceremonies are held during special times of the year or to
consummate important life events. You may see these ceremonies taking place to
celebrate a birth or commemorate a deceased loved one. Elements from these
ceremonies may also be displayed during Japanese festivals.

Shopping
In Japan, shopping is certainly not a scarcity. With an abundance of different categories,
Japan offers a wide variety of shopping for anyone. From domestic brands to foreign
brands, and everything in between, you can find almost anything for your needs.
Groceries are easy to come by and there is shops all in and around the city. Pastries at a
bakery can be purchased for as low as 300 yen and a bowl of ramen for 1,000 yen. Being
located in Tokyo, you will have a wide variety of different shopping districts that all have
their own spin on things, from shops that have options of as low as 100 yen to the highend shops. Most of the major shopping are located near and around the major train

stations that Tokyo has to offer. Right outside of Tokyo, you can find big retailers and
malls that also offer a wide variety of products.

Restaurants
Just like the shopping in Tokyo, food is not a hard thing to find. You can find it
practically anywhere you go. From train stations, along the streets, and even a tiny room
stuck in between two buildings. Just like in the United States, Tokyo offers many
different kinds of food. From traditional Japanese foods, to Italian food, and even
American fast food. There is never a shortage of variety when it comes to food in Tokyo.
A very nice thing that Japan offers, is many of the food shops and restaurants have
displays of their foods at the entrance of the room. This a great tool for someone that
doesn’t speak Japanese and may just want to point at what they want. It offers as a visual
description of the food if you don’t know what it is, or what to call it.

Sushi is easily the most well-known dish for outsiders of Japan and just as popular to the
locals. Sushi-ya is a type of restaurant that specializes in sushi. Just as in the US, you
have the option to sit at table or at the sushi bar itself. It is a neat thing to sit at the sushi
bar, because the sushi chef is working right in front of you, and you can watch as they
prepare your sushi.
Japan also offers a hibachi-like restaurant style that is called Teppanyaki-ya. The
customers sit around an iron griddle and watch as the chef as he prepares their food. In
many cases, the chefs will put on a type of show for the customer and entertain them as
they make the food for them.
Some of the prices of different menu items:
•
Dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant can be had for around 5,000 yen
•
Lunch sets with fish, soup, rice, tea, and vegetables for around 1,200 yen.
•
High end meals can be had at a range of 10,000-40,000 yen.

Culture and Holidays
The culture of Japan is extremely interesting to study and observe. They have many
traditions that have never changed, but they also have new traditions that seem to shift
with fashions and trends of the people.
In the US, the arts are not really viewed as a big deal to most people. But in Japan, the
arts play a big role in the culture and life they live. There are many schools and higher
educations that offer training and preparation for art and performance careers. A few
examples of the arts include the tea ceremony, flower arranging and dance that symbolize
the culture that is defined by Japans books and poetry.

Japan celebrates holidays with a “matsuri,” which means “festival.” Japan follows the
Chinese and Buddhists with most of their holidays and have set Mondays on the calendar
that they recognize these holidays. They do in order for there always to be a three-day
weekend and that Monday off to celebrate. This works out for you, because it will give
you a chance to move around Tokyo and experience more with your weekends. A list of
the big holidays in Japan: New Year’s Day (January 1), Adult Day (May 17), Doll
Festival (March 3), Golden Week (April 29-May 5), Bon Festival (August 13-15), New
Year’s Eve (December 31), birthday of current emperor, and the birthday of the late
Emperor Showa. The biggest of these holidays are New Year and Bon. Baseball is also a
major sport in Japan. The Japanese people find baseball to be very fun and is almost
viewed as a holiday in many of their minds! You can find more information about the
Japanese holidays by following this link: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2062.html
