PART A: Leadership
In his era, Jack Welch was esteemed as one of the best leaders. His CEO term at General
Electric was a transformation from a lightbulb and appliances company to a multinational
enterprise extending to media, industrial products, and financial services. His leadership was
criticized for many layoffs and budget –cuts which earned him the nickname “Neutron Jack”;
however, when GE’s share price rocketed and revenues increased, he was praised (FernándezAráoz, 2020). There are several principles that managers today could learn from him.
One such principle is hiring the right individuals. Jack Welch called this a great people
decision. Executives need to spend adequate time making employee decisions (Fernández-Aráoz,
2020). They are the decisions with the most long-lasting effect and the most difficult to undo.
Jack Welch was disciplined and committed to effective hiring. He believed in employee
differentiation where they would be grouped into three groups according to their performance;
20% best performing, 70 % middle performers, and 10% bottom performers who had to go
(Fernández-Aráoz, 2020). First, managers need to get the right people to take the correct
positions and then helping them thrive. Another trait that propelled Jack Welch’s unique
leadership was his honesty. According to his book called Winning, he condemned the
“murderous” nature that accompanied a lack of candor (Fernández-Aráoz, 2020). Without
candor, fast action, smart ideas, and good people’s contributions are blocked. He believed in
instant correction to help individuals improve before recession times approached. Lastly, Jack
was curious. Jack Welch’s inquisitive nature was not a boasting means. He wanted to get as
much information as he could. In a more dynamic business environment, the executives need to
embrace the learning desire because “CEOs can’t have outdated skill sets. … They must be
voracious [for] knowledge” (Fernández-Aráoz, 2020).

While his people's decision was his greatest strength, it became part of his 20% wrongs
(Fernández-Aráoz, 2020). He failed at succession management when he chose Jeff Immelt as his
successor. Under Immelt, the company lost value worth billions (Forbes, 2020). Despite the
2000s disruptions and crisis, his choice of a successor was one disastrous move. CEOs need
adequate succession planning to prevent a reactive approach to filling the vacant positions.
