At the beginning of the memoir, David Faber is Called to Adventure. Following the Hero’s Adventure as it is outlined in "Hero's Journey 101," a blog designed by publishers as a resource for writers, after the “departure act,” heroes receive a “call to adventure” (sometimes by a malignant force) and “decide to go forth of their own volition to confront a problem they can’t ignore.” David receives this call to adventure after his father is arrested and detained by the Nazis, and David feels compelled to rescue his dad. In fact, David states, “I started toward the center of town, running from doorway to doorway. A soldier might come around the next corner any minute. He would probably shoot me, but I had to take the chance. It was the only way I might find Father” (Faber 35).In the story, David is called to adventure when he discovers the Nazis (a “malignant force”) have captured his father, so David decides to leave the safety of his friends’ home and risk his life to venture out onto the soldier-occupied streets to find and save his father. Being a just a boy, David could have chosen to let someone older and more experienced go, but when confronted with this frightening turn of events, he cannot ignore it; instead, he decides to leave his comfort zone to rescue his dad.
