2x^2 - 9x - 17 = 0

Using quadratic formula, we get

x = (- b ± √b^2 - 4ac)/2a

Now

x = (- (-9) ± √(-9)^2 - 4(2)(-17)) / 2(2)

x = ( 9 ± √81 + 136) / 4

x = ( 9 ± √217) / 4

Hence the roots are    x = { (9 + √217)/4 , (9 - √217)/4 }
