Leadership is an integral part of business operations. It is vital in ensuring that companies
remain objective-driven, and purposeful. Leaders give the team members a sense of direction,
without which confusion would arise. Leadership trickles down to all facets of an organization.
The results depend on the type of leadership, whether appropriate or otherwise. The success of a
company is dependent on many aspects of its operation. All these have to work in tandem to
attain the set objectives. Corporate culture cannot be enforced at the place of work, but can only
be developed through proper leadership techniques (Alvesson, 2013). The performance of a
business is reliant on all members, from the low-level employee to members of the executive
team. Leadership takes on different approaches to fulfill its essence in a corporation, one of
which is the Functional Approach.
In this approach, leaders are a constitute of their actions, rather than their behaviors or
traits. The functional approach maintains that people become leaders by acting like them. Here,
leadership is not inherent from birth or achieved through training, but an innate decision to
portray characteristics associated with leadership (Adair, 2007, p. 23). It says that leaders
become. The approach revolves around the functions of a leader and is less concerned about the
personality of the leader. In this method, leadership is addressed by how followers are influenced
by the behaviors of a leader, and vice versa, how the responses of these followers impact the
leader. In this approach, the team and the perception of leadership are well-thought-out and not
the individuals. This procedure is especially compelling because it focuses on the notion a leader
represents, and not their person. In so doing, the concept is long-lived, unlike individuals are
impermanent.
In this approach, people are expected to align their actions with fruitful functions. People
selected to be team leaders are supposed to depict traits that echo their position. It is through

their deeds that they influence other team members. Members, on the other hand, could display
these qualities as well. In so doing, they will know when their leader is non-effective and offer
corrective solutions, or even take up the role of leadership. With functional leadership, a team
can then set goals and objectives they hope to achieve. Also, effective leaders and followers lead
to the formation of highly performing teams. In the functional approach to leadership, a company
needs to compel members to adopt leadership qualities, in a bid to take up positions of leadership
(Adair, 2007, p. 31).
