Description

For 3 points, write up to 300 words to justify the case for one side of the following debate

Pro: All too often, legislation supported by majorities in both the House and Senate is
thwarted by procedural means like the Hastert rule and the filibuster. A good way to
correct this problem would be to give the president authority to require a yes or no vote
twice a year on a piece of legislation he or she deems essential. This wouldn’t apply to
everything, but rather to just truly important matters. In the 21 st century, patience with
essential legislation is a luxury that good governance cannot afford.

Con: Giving the president authority to require a yes or no vote on legislation by
Congress would violate the sacred principle of separation of powers in the USA.
Congress’s independence from the president, and its ability to be very deliberative and
cautious in enacting legislation, have proven key to protecting Americans from the worst
abuses of government. It would be a mistake to override normal congressional
procedures by giving presidents the right to fast-track special legislation.

For 2 more points, write a response of up to 150 words to something posted on the
other side of the issue

I am pro correcting the thwarting of legislation by giving the president authority to require a yes or no vote twice a year on a piece of legislation he or she deems essential. The concern that giving the president authority to require a yes or no vote on legislation would fail to protect Americans from the worst abuses of government is simply blown out of proportion.

Yes, The President Deserves A Yes Or No Vote
With consistency and compromise being the two key factors that lead to the realization of
a successful outcome, I support the argument that the president should be awarded the yes or no
vote authority as a means of compelling the congress to attend to critical issues, which are
consistently popping up in the 21st century.
Why so?
The primary reason why I believe that the president deserves the yes or no vote rests
solely on the fact that the Hastert rule has led to the frustration of numerous immigrant families.
Case in point, the Yes or No vote would have defined the future of numerous immigrants
protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), as under the House of
Representatives, the immigration debate keeps being introduced and killed for over a decade
now. Giving the affected families closure of knowing where their fate lies, is better than living in
constant fear day in and day out.
Secondly, the ruling would thwart unjust and unconstitutional measures, and provide the
President with an opportunity to revisit controversial acts by Congress. Sievert & Williamson,
(2018) assert that this approach would ensure that the presidential authority is habitually relied
upon as a method to prevent the enactment of “pork barrel bills” where the legislator vote to
swiftly to safeguard their interests or the benefit of the privileged rather than for t...
