During this final week, we are discussing the closing and lessons learned processes. For this final discussion thread, please provide at least three lessons learned that you will take away from the course. This can relate to any aspect of the course, such as course lectures, assignments, readings, discussions, etc. Additionally, be sure to address how these lessons will serve you in your career or studies. Please note: I expect a minimum of 2 -3 paragraphs for your initial post complete with external references. Your response postings are expected to be at least a full paragraph using cited material. Talk about Risk management, Ethical Practices, Communication in business. Respond 1 Lessons learnt and how will they benefit me in my career. Business case: In this course I learnt about business case and its role in getting a project approved. Business case focuses on "not just “what did you built” but “did what you built justify the investment in the time and resources to create it” (Herman & Siegelaub, 2009). Also, I learnt the critical elements which need to be added to make the business case stronger. The template provided, helped me what assumptions are to be made in a project and also the various risks which need to be considered in a project. Additionally, NPV calculation was also clear. If in future I get a chance to make a business case, I can apply the knowledge gathered while doing this assignment. Communication: I was aware that communication is an essential part of a project manager's job profile. "Communication is not only about speaking to and hearing from people, it’s about understanding the complete message" (Communication The Key to Successful Project Management, n.d.). The discussion post made me reflect on skills required to communicate effectively. Also, when researching on global mindset and its importance, it came to light that though it seems to be a very small thing, it can have noticeable effects on communication. Also, this discussion made me ponder how I would improve these skills throughout my career to grow as a project manager? I think this learning I would apply in my day-to-day activity as a project manager. Project Charter: Project charter is the steppingstone for a project to begin. Though it was a group activity it taught me the detailed content that should be added while drafting a charter. The most important thing I learnt in a charter is the scope statement drafting as to what work should be included and excluded in it. Also, one has to add resource requirements. A charter can give us a basic idea of the available resources and it would assist the project manager in a detailed requirement gathering, if any resources required for the project need to be arranged (hiring candidates, equipment, softwares etc.) (Brown, 2005). This knowledge acquired would be useful in drafting future project charters as that most of the times is to be done by project manager. References Brown, A. S. (2005). The charter: selling your project. Paper presented at PMI® Global Congress 2005—North America, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Newtown Square, PA: Project Management Institute. Communication The Key to Successful Project Management, (n.d.). 2020 Project Management. https://2020projectmanagement.com/resources/communication-management/communication-the-key-to-successful-project-managem ent Herman, B. & Siegelaub, J. M. (2009). Is this really worth the effort? The need for a business case. Paper presented at PMI® Global Congress 2009—North America, Orlando, FL. Newtown Square, PA: Project Management Institute. Respond 2 Hello Everyone, Project management practices course has helped me understand a lot of things such as: 1. Project Documentation 2. Knowledge from Discussion Boards 3. Research and APA guidelines Project Documentation Documentation is one of the major skills required for a Project manager as it helps to keep track of everything throughout a project life cycle. “It fulfills the two most important parts of a project management system: to ensure that project requirements are fulfilled and to establish traceability with respect to what has been done, who has done it, and when was it done (Copper Mobile, 2018).” This course has helped to understand a different kind of documentation such as Business Case, Project Charter, Change request form, and scope document. The case study of Acme Company helped me to understand different scenarios, changes, and challenges on various project stages, I can apply the knowledge of creating distinctive documents in my career as a project manager and can refer to them in case of any conflict or issues arise. Knowledge from Discussion Board The discussions board have been a lot informative as everyone shared their experience, challenges, and thoughts. I enjoyed reading the divergent perspectives of everyone on a single topic, this created an opportunity to think from other’s perspectives which is one of the required skills for a good project manager. The discussion of week two and week four regarding internal and external drivers in a project and communication respectively drew my attention as other classmates have shared divergent thoughts. Specifically, when Poorva mentioned different communication levels such as vertical and horizontal in an organization while responding to my initial response. Research and APA guidelines knowledge As the discussion boards and assignment needed external references, I researched a lot and came through the latest blogs, articles, news, and papers. In my career, as a project manager, I would require a lot of market research and analysis for the project and documentation. I was developing the habit of reading articles and blogs as it gets you updated with the latest technology, changes, and recent developments, and this course worked as the cherry on the cake for me. Additionally, being a foreign student, I have never encountered APA guidelines in my education back then and through this course, I was introduced to APA guidelines. Substantial usage of APA guidelines has helped me understand the citation and references for different mediums and scenarios such as work by two authors, electronics sources, books, papers, and journals, etc. I can say that because of PJM6000, I am now aware of the APA guidelines and can use them in my other subjects or further writings.
