Myrna Sloan in her introductory remarks referenced "the power of eminent domain" and Bryant mentioned "the only objection...the difficulty of persuading the owners of the soil part with it. "what's this all about?

Of  course you have heard about Central Park in the middle of New York City. Well, this is about how that came about. In 1853 the State of New York used  eminent domain to acquire an area of more than 700 acres in the middle of Manhattan.  Taking over the land for the park displaced more than 1,600 residents. Myrna Sloan is a Bryant Library Archivist who wrote an article about the origins of Central Park and William C Bryant was a poet and editor of the New York Post. He wrote an editorial in that paper extolling the advantages of the Park to everyone in the city, except of course for those who would lose their homes for it. He was influential in getting the park project completed.
