3a. Kitagawa Utamaro – Two Courtesans
• Contour Lines – these are the simplest type of lines which are used to outline and define
a shape. With the use of contour lines, the subject matter of the art becomes clear and
demarcated putting more weight on it rather than the underlying details of the art. As you
can see in the artwork, the subject matter was given enough stress that paves the way for
the audience’s attentions to be diverted to the courtesans alone.
• Classic Lines – these, by nature, elicit visually stable and stationary element. They are
usually expressed in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal manner that provides structure to
any composition. As evident in Utamaro’s Two Courtesans, the whole piece became more
visually striking and engaging due to different variations of classic line elements being
displayed.
• Expressive Lines – these lines typically loose, curved, irregular, and fluid. They bear a
sense of refinement, vitality, and naturalness. These lines are associated with Chinese
artists’ works for it helps the art piece to be richer in meaning and it amplifies the overall
message that it conveys.
3b. Michelangelo – Head of a Satyr
• Hatch Lines – these lines are expressed in a short, repetitive, and one direction intervals.
It gives the artwork a visual texture to the surface of the subject matter. As presented in art
piece by Michelangelo, it is generally presented in a series of one direction lines.
• Crosshatch Lines – these lines are somewhat the same with hatch lines. The only
difference is that, it is more varied and richer in tone by intensifying the pressure applied
to the drawing tool. With this series of lines, it gives the art piece the substance and weight
without using a combination of multiple lines.
