Discussion Prompt(s)

Tom Joserine, a nurse manager of a 36-bed orthopedic unit, has decided that he is too busy to complete all the work that needs to be done. Nurse Joserine has recently read an article on delegation and has decided that delegating tasks to others is an excellent way to accomplish the mound of work that he has to complete. He believes that there are two tasks that take most of his time, disciplinary problems and quality improvement activities. Nurse Joserine calls the nursing coordinator, Janet Jeleen, into the office and informs her that she will now be responsible for all evaluations and handling of incident reports. Nurse Jeleen tells him that she will need some guidance on this new activity. Nurse Joserine informs her that the hospital has managerial classes in which she can enroll to help her with this new duty.

Nurse Joserine also calls Jo Ellen Mae, a clinical nurse specialist for the orthopedic unit, and informs her that she will now be responsible and accountable for the quality improvement activities on the unit. Monthly reports are due on the 10th of each month. He informs Nurse Mae that if she has any questions, she can call the head of the quality improvement committee. When Nurse Joserine leaves the hospital that day, he feels good that he has decreased his workload and happy that he found the article on delegation

  • Did Nurse Joserine delegate tasks appropriately? Why or why not?

“In nursing, there are five rights of delegation. Right task, right circumstance, right person, right supervision, and right direction and communication.” In my opinion, nurse Tom Joserine did not appropriately delegate the tasks to other nurses. He did not follow any of these rights except for delegating the right tasks. (Barrow, Jennifer) First off he did not ask them or tell them anything about the tasks, just a few sentences. He went on to tell them that if they needed help, there are resources available basically saying he does not have the time to explain to them what the task is. He did not consider if they can even handle that specific task. In the nursing world especially, delegation can be very dangerous. If the right task is not delegated to the right person, a patient could possibly be in danger. A good nurse manager, or anybody with leadership power would confront them ask first ask if they are willing to help him. Next he should make sure they have the right skills, experience, and competencies so they can complete these tasks successfully.

  • Who will be held accountable for the outcomes of the roles/tasks that Nurse Joserine has delegated?

Nurse Joserine delegated his tasks to Janet and Ellen Mae, since he is the one that delegated the tasks it is still his responsibility that they get done. Even though he told them that they are accountable for these duties, it is still not their responsibility. This is a big reason that he should make sure that whoever he delegates to, has the right skill and competencies to make sure the job gets done correctly. At the end of the day, it will all fall back on him and whether it is done right or not he will be the person that is responsible for those tasks.

Did Nurse Joserine delegate tasks appropriately? Why or why not?

According to Huber, delegation is a four-step process. Step one is to assess and plan, step two is communication, step three is surveillance and supervision, and lastly step four is evaluation and feedback (Huber, 2013). Not only that but when delegating the right person must be chosen for the task and this includes a person who is educated and competent in the area to complete the given tasks (Huber, 2013). In this case, Nurse Joserine did not follow the proper system to delegate appropriately. He passed on his tasks to people who were not proficient in the operation. He did not educate them on how to complete the tasks, instead, her directed them to outside resources and did not provide them with any means of communication for assessments or evaluation of the tasks. Nurse Joserine disregarded all four steps of the delegation process.

Who will be held accountable for the outcomes of the roles/tasks that Nurse Joserine has delegated?

In the nursing profession, delegation is a large part of the role. As such, supervision is an important aspect of delegating tasks because it involves oversight of the delegation as well as evaluation. Delegating is an extension of the nurse’s job and requires trust (Huber, 2013). As a result, Nurse Joserine will be responsible for any outcomes that arise from the roles and tasks that he has delegated to other individuals. “Effective delegation requires that the delegate have the authority to accompany the responsibility (Huber, 2013). This rule states that the delegate must possess the proper training in order to complete the tasks and if delegated to the wrong person, the delegator must be held accountable for the error in judgment. Nurse Joserine did not train his delegates properly and consequently, all outcomes should be his sole responsibility.

Delegation Process
Did Nurse Joserine delegate tasks appropriately? Why or why not?
In the first place, Nurse Joserine did not delegate the tasks appropriately. It appears he
just rushed through the process without a proper idea of what he is doing. Delegation of duties is
a leadership process that requires concise procedures, evaluations, and regular re-assessment to
see if the tasks are being completed successfully. Edwards et al. (2018) add that for a successful
delegation process, leaders should understand key concepts such as delegation skills, delegation
tools (time schedule tools), and comprehensively teaching the delegates to effectively implement
the process. It appears Nurse Joserine did apply less of these concepts and procedures. The only
thing is to pick on coordinator and nurse specialist who are team models in their various
departments but it doesn’t mean they are ready to take up management tasks immediately.
Maybe after choosing them he should have taken some time to guide them through on what to d...
