It was a fine afternoon when the news came through. It had been a good morning, with the
family gathering together for breakfast before going out for a long drive for a camping
expedition. I was also supposed to join the family but thanks to my philosophy lecturer, I was
stuck with volumes of books describing the ever seemingly incomprehensible Descartes
philosophical ideas. I mean it, by the way. My father was insistent on myself sitting through the
quiet provided by their absence, with special emphasis on the absence of my sisters Liz and Rose
who are the undisputed chatterboxes of the neighborhood. I was still reading Descartes ideas
when the beeping of the phone woke me from the utopia of philosophy that I had immersed
myself in. This was totally unexpected as I had really thought that I had already secured a little
time unto myself. Then the news, the bad news that you really wish you could not be delivered in
your ears. There was an accident…could you come and…sorry…’. I actually do not remember
the last words but they sounded more hard to comprehend than the philosophy I had been
desperately trying to read. The working thesis of this essay is true happiness, the flow can only
come from the factors that are beyond our control being in harmony with our lives. This implies
that we may try to say that we are happy within but the outside environment should reinforce
that. I am a student of pragmatism and based on such, I can authoritatively state that flow comes
from factors beyond our control and the assumption that true happiness comes from within is an
infatuation, a fallacy or denial of the reality.
