Description

THE PURPOSE of this project is to give you an opportunity to formulate a research question, collect your own qualitative data, and contextualize and analyze data. You are advised to choose rather innocuous research topics rather than tragedies, or abuse. You cannot study participants who are under the age of 18.

A GOOD topic would be:

How do SMU students chose their major? What do SMU students think of COVID 19/online teaching?

A BAD topic would be:

What are the effects of verbal abuse on children? How do Syrian refugees in Halifax cope with PTSD?

Research proposal (15% of the final grade) due March 1st by 11:59pm on Brightspace

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you feedback on your research topic and its feasibility -i.e. whether or not the topic is suitable to collect data and assess its sensitivity. I strongly encourage you to consider a research topic that is NOT controversial, NOT sensitive and doable. I will not accept research projects that will raise ethical issues. The proposal will also help you do preliminary research on your subject and a preliminary literature review.

Please note that you are to refrain from data collection in public. You cannot chose field work/observations for example. If you choose “interviewing” or “focus group” as a method, you will NOT be conducting interviews in person (unless you live with them). You may conduct interviews via phone/skype/email. Or you may choose document/content analysis where you will collect data from journals, art work (music?), internet, or public documents.

Your proposal will include the following and should not exceed 3 pages in total:

(1) identify the topic that you are interested in;

(2) your research question and its societal significance (2 references);

(3) A theoretical framework and the reason why it is applicable to your question (1 reference);

(4) One qualitative research method (1 reference)

(5) Your -target- sample (age, gender, other characteristics) and how you will recruit them.

(6) In addition, please include an annotated bibliography of 4 references (see above) relevant to your paper. Annotations are a brief summary of an article or chapter.

Annotated Bibliography, Out of 4 resources: 2 references should be on the issue (previous research conducted on your research topic/issue which will also speak to the societal significance of your research), 1 reference should be on your theoretical framework (how has it been used by researchers, or how/why it was developed), and 1 resource on your method of choice (say, if you will chose email interviews then you will find an article or book chapter which defines it, or which shows its range of applications).

The proposal will be maximum 3 pages: You can outline (1), (2), (3), (4) & (5) in maximum two pages, and the annotated bibliography on the third page.

You should be set for data collection upon receiving my feedback.

PLEASE be advised that you may have to change topics, or adjust it, if your original topic is deemed to be too sensitive or too complex for a class-based project.

Furthermore, if you do not submit a research proposal you will not be allowed to submit the final assignment.

Covid-19 Research Proposal Outline
✓ Undoubtedly, the Covid-19 pandemic has ravaged most of the economic sectors,
including but not limited to; the tourism sector, the manufacturing sector, the service
industries, the education sector, to name just a few.
✓ However, the education sector is one of the hardest-hit sectors by the pandemic. When
the disease broke out in early 2020, most countries put in place various restrictions to
contain the disease.
✓ Some of the containment measures put in place includes; suspension of air transport to
and from Covid-19 hotspots areas, suspension of academic activities, and enforcement of
social distancing rules, among others.
✓ Consequently, most of the schools were closed when the pandemic set in, and thus
learners were at some point denied their right to access education which is one of the
fundamental rights provided for by the constitution.
✓ Five months later, most of the learners were still at home, and thus, the schools had to
come up with a safer method to reach learners without physical contacting.
✓ Consequently, blended learning was launched to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic,
which is mainly based on virtual learning other than face-to-face learning.
✓ Currently, most of the countries have allowed a phased reopening of the learning
institutions, starting with those in universities and colleges.
✓ Unfortunately, some learners are still not able to enjoy their right to education owing to
the challenges posed by the pandemic.
