Memorandum To: Thomas Swartz From: Richard Corsi Date: October 4, 2005 Subject: Formal Topic Proposal This memo is being submitted for your approval of and feedback on my research paper topic for IME 1020. Following a brief overview of my topic choice, I will clarify the problem I wish to research, suggest possible solutions to the problem, define the scope and methods of my research, and examine my preliminary conclusions based on the research I’ve completed so far. Overview Over the past few years, the ever-increasing price of gasoline has scientists venturing for a new fuel cell such as hydrogen. The price of gasoline has risen because it is a limited resource. Gasoline as a limited resource means that once gasoline runs out it is gone forever. Every day that people continue to use gasoline as a main source of fuel means there is a smaller amount of gasoline left. As gasoline diminishes, the price of it will increase. It is only a matter of time before the small quantity of gasoline left is a national problem. A hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle would solve this problem and many of the other problems caused by gasoline. Statement of Problem The problem the U. S. is facing is the ever-decreasing supply of gasoline to the everincreasing demand. If this keeps up, the price of gasoline will rise significantly, and people will be left without some of their everyday necessities, such as a car. This would create a national problem, and the economy of the U. S. would diminish. If the U. S. continues to use gasoline as a primary fuel source, eventually the resource will run out, causing a nationwide crisis. Proposed Solution Some companies in the world have already found a short-term solution, but then again it is only short term. Hybrid cars run on both electricity and gas, which means the total amount of gas the car needs decreases. Better fuel efficiency and improved mileage Corsi 2 mean less fill-ups. However, hybrid cars are still using a non-renewable resource, which means gasoline is still diminishing. The U. S. needs to design a manageable hydrogen fuel cell or biofuel car. Both of these types of energy sources beat gasoline, diesel, and propane-powered cars. Hydrogen rather than biofuel would probably be the more suitable type of car because hydrogen is readily abundant and environmentally friendly. Therefore, the U. S. has to develop a successful and affordable hydrogen car to prevent the nationwide crisis that would be caused by running out of gasoline. Scope There are many sources about hydrogen and biofuel as possible fuel for cars. Since the rapid rise in gas prices began only a few years ago, there are many researchers trying to find out which fuel will be the best. In order for me to find out if hydrogen powered cars are the best way for the U. S. to go, I will have to consider: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. How much money does it cost to produce both hydrogen and biofuel? What are the benefits of hydrogen as a fuel? What are the disadvantages of hydrogen as a fuel? What are the benefits of biofuel cars? What are the disadvantages of biofuel cars? How hard would it be to transfer from gasoline to hydrogen or biofuel? Methods My primary data will come from technical journal articles pertaining to hydrogen and biofuel. These articles will be retrieved either electronically or in hard copy through Waldo Library at Western Michigan University. By comparing information found in these articles, I should be able to conclude whether or not hydrogen is the best type of fuel for the next generation of cars. I have already found three technical journal articles discussing the use of hydrogen as the next fuel. These articles are: Appleby, A. (1999). The electrochemical engine for vehicles. Scientific American, 281(1), 74-79. Retrieved September 26, 2005, from ASTA Database. Dvorak, P. (2004). Heading toward the hydrogen economy. Machine Design, 76(18), 92, 94, 96, 98. Retrieved September 26, 2005, from ASTA Database. Maloney, L. (2005). Fuel cells get ready for prime time. Design News, 60(4), 45, 46, 48, 50. Retrieved September 26, 2005, from ASTA Database. Corsi 3 Some secondary data will come from respected websites. Hopefully these sites will aid me in determining if hydrogen is better than biofuel. I have already found a few websites that discuss the opinions of people who own or have used a biofuel or hydrogen powered car. Conclusion If gasoline continues to be the primary source of fuel throughout the world, it will eventually run out. Even before it runs out, gasoline will become too expensive for the average person to afford. A new fuel source has to be designed that will eliminate the problems caused by diminishing supplies of gasoline. The solution that seems most feasible is a hydrogen fuel cell powered car. This fuel cell will be superior to biofuel due to its affordability and accessibility. With your approval, I would like to pursue this topic for my research paper.
