Description

A researcher is interested in studying the effects of a music therapy program on depression in nursing home residents. The independent variable is the music therapy program—two sessions per week for six weeks—and the dependent variable is the scores on three different measures of depression. Use the following designs to explain how this research might be conducted. Create a graph to depict each design. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each design. If you were conducting this research, which of the following designs would you choose? Explain your response.

  • One-group posttest only design
  • One-group pretest-posttest design
  • Nonequivalent control group design
  • Nonequivalent pretest-posttest design
  • Interrupted time series design
  • Control series design

Given the above study, there is no doubt that different research designs can be used. One
of the research designs that can be used is the one-group posttest only design. The latter design
can be used by first introducing a treatment (more sessions per week for the six weeks) on the
nursing home residents and then measuring their scores on the three different measures of
depression. The latter research design's advantages include that it is less time-consuming as no
pretest is done (Price et al., 2014). Its disadvantages, however, include that it is difficult to
determine the magnitude of an outcome and whether outcomes are due to the independent
variable or other factors since no pretest exists.
