Population Health and Healthy People 2020 Analysis |
For this assignment, you will select a Healthy People 2020 goal and consider the role of public health nurses in achieving this goal. Select a goal and a specific population that is impacted by this goal and the health issue it targets. In a 1,250-1,500 word paper, provide an analysis of the population and discuss how the goal and related health issue affects them. Include the following:
Describe the issue and the population that it affects. Why is this a vulnerable population? Include demographics of the population and why this issue is prevalent in this population.
- Analyze the vitality and social determinants of health for the population. Consider indicators of social and economic conditions, health resources, environmental conditions related to health, social functioning, and attitude toward health care.
- Discuss a proposed intervention and discuss how its benefits the target population. Consider any drawbacks or shortcomings of the intervention as well. Include in your discussion evidence that the intervention is in line with the core functions and ten essential public health services.
Cite at least five resources in your response.

Population Health and Health People 2020 Analysis
Introduction
The social determinant of health is a goal that helps people to improve their health and
wellness. The target can solve the problem of obesity which the majority of the elderly face in
their life. The paper analyzes obesity among the elderly, determines the social determinants of
health, and recommends possible interventions for the obesity problem.
Issue and the Population
The health issue involves obesity, and the population it affects is the elderly population.
Obesity involves chronic health condition that is connected with severe health risks. The elderly
population consists of people aging 65 years and above. Individuals in this age bracket spend
most of their time sitting with little or no physical activity. Obesity is associated with abnormal
body weight and adiposity that impairs a person's health. Obesity entails the fifth leading cause
of death among the elderly population accounting for millions of deaths annually. There has been
an increasing trend in the prevalence of obesity among the elderly population; obesity is more
prevalent among older adults due to their age and lifestyle. Between 2015 and 2016, the elderly
population recorded an obesity prevalence rate of 39.8% (Hales, 2017). Obesity among the
elderly population has become a public health crisis that increases health care costs; older people
living with obesity experience psychological and physical problems.
Obesity is more prevalent in the elderly population than other populations because of
several reasons. Older adults are more prone to obesity because of hormonal changes that occur
as a person ages. The hormonal changes coupled with the less active lifestyle puts the elderly
population at more risk of becoming overweight and hence, obese. Hormonal changes result...
