Globalization and Its Effects on Health
Globalization as a phrase refers to the growing interdependence that is experienced in the
global populations, economies, and cultures, having been brought about by increased interaction
and complementary cross-border traders. Ideally, the manifestation of globalization across the
globe has brought about numerous gains and limitations, with the case study “Eradicating
Smallpox” accurately capturing this aspect. The particular case study expounded more about
smallpox as an epidemic, one that in 1966 had claimed the lives of approximately 1.5 million to
2 million individuals; and this trend rolled out over a couple of years (Seymour, 2006). At the
time, smallpox was clearly revered given that there were an estimated 10 to 15 million cases of
the condition, which had spread across more than 50 countries (Seymour, 2006).
Positive and Negative Impacts of Globalization?
Globalization as a platform was quite instrumental in fostering the spread of information
pertaining to smallpox, an aspect that played a critical role in enabling its eradication. Thanks to
the interaction between individuals of different cultures and regions, crucial information
regarding the transmission and vaccination of the disease were easily dispersed through
campaigns, an element that helped WHO significantly realize success from its 1960s plan that
was committed towards Smal Pox identification, isolation, tracing of victims and vaccination
(Seymour, 2006). When focusing on the negative aspect, globalization was sadly still the root
