Summarized history of Islam
Islam simply means submission in Arabic; the religion started approximately 1400 years
ago in Mecca in the Middle East and was founded by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad as a
way of surrendering to the will of God or Allah who is the creator of the earth and also the one that
sustains life in it (Patheos & BBC, 2014). Prophet Muhammad is believed to be the last prophet
that was sent by God (Allah), the other prophets who are held in high regard by Muslims include
Jesus (Isa), Moses (Musa) and Abraham (Ibrahim) (BBC, 2014).
The importance of these elements for Muslims
i.

Quran
The Qur’an is the Muslims Holy book which contains the Holy word as given to Prophet
Muhammad by God (Allah).

ii.

Five Pillars
The Five Pillars of Islam are a very important part for every Muslim in their journey of
Islam. They are namely; Shahada, Salat , Zakat, Sawm and Hajj. Shahada which means testifying
to God being one, this is done through a regular declaration that “there is no God but Allah and
