Outline of a Research Proposal

Here follows a concise, content-neutral outline structure for a research proposal.

i. Introduction

Your introduction should provide the background or the skeleton of the paper. You are establishing your basic framework for research. You should probably have a few subsections in the introduction.

  • a. You can grab the attention of the reader with your topic.
  • b. You should provide brief background information and explore past research.
  • c. It will discern if your research is qualitative or quantitative and should allude to the thesis statement.

ii. Statement of the Problem

  • a. This section will describe the analytical approach that you intend to use.
  • b. You will fully describe the problem as it related to your topic of research.
  • c. It will answer the question, "Why does this research need to be done?"

iii. Purpose of the Study

  • a. You will need to provide a well rounded, intelligent and substantial statement on why the research that you are doing needs to be done.
  • b. It will disclose the hypothesis that needs to be tested and any questions surrounding it.
  • c. It will normally begin with the statement, "The purpose of this academic research study is…"
  • d. It will provide a detailed discussion of whether you will be doing quantitative or qualitative research, and describe the instruments of research (survey (Links to an external site.), interview, questionnaire, etc.) to be used.

iv. Literature Review

  • a. This will discuss the information that is already known about the project.
  • b. It will review any pressing and pertinent research that is in any way tied to the hypothesis debunking it.
  • c. It provides a research strategy - as in what sources will you use.

v. Research Questions or Hypotheses

  • a. You will disclose your hypothesis here.
  • b. You will further disclose any research questions that surround your hypothesis.
  • c. You will address the possible testable theories that will bolster your hypothesis.

vi. Methods and Procedures

  • a. This section will tell exactly which methods you will use in order to prove your hypothesis.
  • b. It discusses the key variables that you will test and/or control in order to prove your hypothesis to be valid.
  • c. This section will go in depth on your research methods.

vii. Limitations

  • This section will discuss any limitations that may arise in your research.

viii. Significance

  • This section discusses why your research is relevant to your audience.

Introduction

The school to pipeline refers to the recent trend of students that end lead them out of the
school to the criminal justice system. The zero tolerance was created to address the safety issues
in the schools by preventing the columbine school shootings and other violence acts in the school
environment. However, the policy has created have developed a culture of students
criminalization in the country. The disciplinary action has made a great difference between
protecting the students and criminalizing the youths.
The zero tolerance have ended up creating disparities in the students, since it end up
impacting the students of color and those from low income populations. African-American
students are thrice likely to become victims of suspensions than the white students. The
increased suspensions result to decrease in classroom time or even entirely quitting education
which in turn results to lower academic achievements on the affected students. Two thirds of
prison inmates in California have not completed their high school education and the young black
males between the age of 20 and 24 do not have a high school or diploma certificate (Department
of Education, 2016). Black male students are likely to victims of school to prison pipeline
instead of achieving their academic goals. Most of these students experience trauma home and
neighborhoods that have experience in on their disruptive behaviors in school.
ii.

Statement of the Problem

School to prison pipeline continues to be an issue affecting the education system in the
United States. Then zero tolerance has proved to be ineffective approach in the schools. The
behavioral intervention leads to loss of many students to gang violence, suspensions or the
correctional facilities due to inadequate concern on the students’ culture, then impact that their
home and neighborhoods have on their overall behavior. Every time schools suspend students

and push them into the school to prison timeline, the likelihood that these students will join
crime in future increases since they feel criminalized. The purpose of the zero tolerance is to
reduce drugs abuse and violence’s in schools but is also applying to minor offenses such as
classroom disruptions and truancy. Notably, this has changed the school environment into
prison-like environment which has made students feel criminalized in the schools. The approach
can affect the students’ opportunities to become positive influencers of their community.
iii.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this research problem is to explore the reasons why School to prison
pipeline is an issue that affects the education system and potential solutions to the problem. The
study will interview the staff members about their perception on the zero tolerance approach and
how it affects students. The staff members will also be questioned on practices that they feel
would be a good alternative for the zero tolerance approach. Questionnaire will be the best
technique for collection such data from the staff members.

Literature Review

Effect of school to prison pipeline on students learning
Schools in the low income districts lose their students to the correctional facilities due to
the strict zero tolerance system. The students who fall victims of the correctional facilities are
less likely to continue with education after their jail term (Rocque & Snellings, 2018). The zero
tolerance system does not focus on restoring positive behaviors on the students and end up losing
them to gangs and increases the level of dropout in the community. Behaviors are taught and not
an inherent quality that schools should assume students automatically know how to react (Hetey,
& Eberhardt, 2018). Failure to consider cultural and home backgrounds only makes the
education sector to lose more students to the criminal justice system where they will receive no

help at all. Students portray different behaviors due to their different cultural backgrounds and
cultural sensitivity. The policy discards the measures of education to meet ...
