Introduction
Medieval British culture was rich in mythical characters, supernatural inclinations and the
belief in the glorification of heroes. Some of the brave heroes served the king in his courts and
were bound to serve the king by law. They were ready to sacrifice their lives for the King. One
of the well-known and revered kings of Medieval Britain was King Arthur. King Arthur had
many knights around him all the time and one of the well-known knights in this period was Sir
Gawain. According to myths that date back to this period, sir Gawain was one of the Knights of
the Round Table. There are many stories that date back to this era. One outstanding theme
among these stories was the ranking of members of the King’s court, including the knights on
account of their chivalry and honesty. The more honest a person was, the more respect they
received from the members of the public and the king himself. Covenants made using the word
of mouth were very respected and people who did not uphold them were considered to be
dishonest. This chivalry was what gave rise to the story of sir Gawain and the green knight. This
paper will offer an insight into the story and relate to Sir Gawain’s experiences to modern times.
It will look into a number of themes and how these themes have held over time by exploring how
the character of Sir Gawain would be animated in modern Britain.
