Abdullah Alsomali Suzan Harnett KNES235-003 11/21/16 Top Causes of Death in the World Introduction Death is the most painful experience that occurs when one loses their loved ones. Science defines death as the termination of all biological functions of an organism bringing an end to its life. Death has been there for all organisms since the beginning of existence, and there have been different causes. From war to accidents, the causes of death especially in our generation where there are many causes. Some of them can be stopped while others prove tricky to stop for scientists and practitioners in different areas. The causes keep changing as human beings lifestyle changes. In this text, I will discuss some of the top causes of death in the modern day. Heart Disease Heart disease is a range of conditions that affect the heart. Some of the diseases might include blood vessel disease and heart defects that one was born with. The term cardiovascular disease can also be used instead as they mean the same thing. It remains a leading cause of deaths in the world. In 2012, 17.5 million people died due to cardiovascular disease. The number is estimated to represent 31% of all deaths in the world (WHO n.p). Out of the 17.5 million deaths, 7.4 million were out of coronary heart disease and the remaining 6.7 million from stroke. Cancer In 2012, it was estimated that 8.1 million people died of cancer. The number is expected to rise even further in the coming years. Oral, l ung, breast, prostate colorectum, stomach and liver cancer are the main causes of the many deaths linked to cancer. A third of the cancer- related deaths are caused by behavioral and dietary risk, low fruit intake, the use of tobacco, alcohol, and lack of physical activity. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases These are diseases of the structures and airways of the lungs. The most common diseases are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary hypertension. The diseases are not curable, but there is medication to help the situation and ensure that people can live normally. They are, however, the third leading cause of death globally. Asthma alone causes 180,000 deaths in the world every year (Preston n.p). In total 3.1 million people in the world die annually due to chronic lower respiratory diseases. HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS is a disease that can be transmitted through blood or sexually. The disease has claimed millions of lives over the years. It remains a big threat to more people dying out the disease every year. The numbers have drastically reduced, but it still kills 1.5 million people every year (Santulli n.p). The disease has not cured and people that are infected are advised to live healthy lives with physical activities. They should also try not to transmit the disease to others as it would result in death as there is no cure. Diarrhea Diarrheal diseases still claim many live in the modern world despite the many efforts that have been put in place. The disease has killed billions of people and is one of the longest diseases known to kill. The disease claims the lives of at least 1.5 million people globally every year. Diarrheal diseases remain to be a headache despite the advanced technology that could help fix the problem with the disease. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes Mellitus has proven to be amongst the top killers with its number of casualties increasing by the year. The disease claims 1.5 million lives annually around the globe. The numbers are, however, forecasted to rise in the coming years as the disease becomes even tougher to handle than before. Road Accidents Road accidents are not disease related and involve deaths on the roads. 1.3 million People are killed in roads either as pedestrians or drivers. Some of the cases of the deaths are reckless driving and faulty vehicles. Many governments have tried to curb the situation by building better roads but to no avail. It remains a big issue that has claimed many lives. Healthy People 2020 Goal One of the main goals of the healthy people 2020 is reducing cancer cases, illness, disability, and deaths. There has been continued research that has shown to bear fruits in the incidence as well as the death rates for cancer in the world (Healthy People n.p). This clearly shows that cancer can be beaten since it threatens to keep increasing and claim more lives. The causes of cancer might include unhealthy eating behaviors, smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol among many others. They can all be addressed and help people find better behaviors that are beneficial to them. The goal by healthy people 2020 can be achieved through interacting with people is teaching them about cancer and how they can avoid it altogether. Conclusion The list of the top causes of deaths in the world consists mainly of diseases. Some of them are hereditary while some are behavioral and are acquired through the behavior of many people (Healthy People n.p). I believe that most of these diseases can be avoided through proper behavior by maintaining hygiene as well as our physical health. Most of them could be controlled while the remaining will need more attention so that they can be controlled. Diseases like cancer and heart disease, which are the leading causes, can be controlled and reduce the death toll in the world. Works Cited Healthy People, "Cancer | Healthy People 2020".
